    New security needed

Hi all here is my pond that i currently have to net since losing 2 koi last year to a heron. It is a nightmare to put on and off and does not look too good. So i am thinking of using bamboo canes around the edge and using fishing line between them as a fence?
How high would you suggest? And how far to space the line?
As i understand he must land on the side and nab them, they don't swoop down and catch them?

    Thanks for the help

Land on the side and will enter the pond, they don’t just stand on the side. Where the three planters are looks an ideal landing point. Ornaments on the walls would be worth a go, they can’t walk around unhindered. A CD hanging on a bit of fishing line works for me, they don’t like the glint as it catches the light.

Yes i was going to put it at the water edge along the back aswell where them planters are (filters are under there) i know the net is best it is just such an effort to take it off and on so ofter the clean. Planters around the edge seams a good idea aswell. Never thought of a CD worth hanging one up aswell good idea

i like my method, metal poles with a bend in so they go up 30 cm bend at 30 degrees then another 30cm four strands of wire (special wire) and a few wires criss crossing the pond from pole tops.
Next connect said special wire to my electric fence 2.3 joule 10,000v energiser
the heron only touches it once or twice before learning not too

My dog sorts out any birds that come near my pond.
Taught him well. He can be a sleep in his basket. And the slightest sound he is after them.
Get a good dog problem solved. And no ugly pieces of wire and sticks around the pond
Plus you end up with one loyal friend for life.

I think I lost about 5 fish one year, I found them around the garden with two holes in them, they were just left on the floor, it took some working out that it was a heron as the holes in each fish were all the same spacing, this year I have lost one, I caught the heron on CCTV it was walking along my pond window and balanced on the glass edge to strike at the fish.

I have built a pergola over the pond and netted that, until I can finish it off, so far the heron hasn't been back
4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
    Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
    Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
    2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger
    Idealseal MS290

Nice one Roy. Sounds like you have solved it. Sorry to hear of your fish losses mate.
Crows around my garden do a great job as well.
    There very territorial.

    Thanks Fred,

The dogs do a good job but the heron gets up to early for them, the heron can be here at 5:00 in the morning, I don't get up til 6:00 so he has ample time to go fishing

I have a similar problem Roy. Being only a mile from the Attenborough nature reserve ,half a mile from the River Trent & 400yards from the Erewash Canal it is a magnet for the Herons. Two years ago the heron cleared out my nature pond of breeding shubunkins & Orf ( luckily the fry survived in grow on tanks) .Then it returned last year , standing taller than myself was around at 5am just as I was ending a night shift.

The koi are in a 5' deep pond under a tree but I watched as the Heron walked along a 7ft brick wall walked over a summerhouse down onto a decking just to see if the dogs were loose.Needless to say I am currently building a part glazed / shuttered pergola over the 1000 gallon pond before I continue with the 6000gallon pond build which I think will have canvas sails over when completed.

Just about to order some netting for my pergola as well, not only to give a bit of shade but hopefully might help the pond be a bit less visible for a heron flyover

The other half is a target for mosquitos with a vengeance but she loves to go and watch the pond early to late evening so I think additional to the shade netting some fine mosquito netting will be in order too with trellis panels on runners similar to Japanese paper sliding doors. Warmer in winter too

To have a credible Owl it needs to be a large European Eagle Owl size and have the head moving by wind or battery motor even then Herons are aware when these deterrents don't move about. I also have metallic spinners that flash light about spinning in the wind or again electric rotator

I’ve read poor reviews on those webbing things as herons have been known to spear through the gaps . I use an electronic scarer - it’ works off a PIR and when triggered makes various noises inc dogs, eagles etc and flashes a bright strobe too. Cost me £100 I think. The make is velda if that helps.
I also have electric wire around the perimeter which is charged off an equine charger so hopefully mr heron gets a belt if he tries to step under it . My dog has also been known to try so it keeps her off too lol. It’s high voltage but low amperage so doesn’t harm them btw .
My 3rd later if protection is fishing line stretched over the top so which amazingly small birds dart between with no problem whatsoever but I think a heron would struggle !
