Any ideas on a filter alarm?

I’ve put some decent security on to my filter house such as padlocks, security lights, etc but I’m looking for a small alarm now.

I bought a very simple looking one from Amazon that was just a motion sensor and a speaker and this could be armed by a remote. Worked well for the first day but at 4.30am it went off, woke me up and rushed outside.

Nothing there. The security lights all round the house were off and nobody around. If someone was anywhere on our property at least one light would be on.

So I thought maybe rodent set it off. I re-armed it and then sat and waited. Just in case.

It went off again 10mins later with me watching so I knew then that nothing was around.

Tested it the next day and it is just cr*p. No idea why it goes off randomly so it’s going back. Shame.

So, has anyone got anything similar installed on their filter houses that works well?

I'm looking for a simple install and just something that would go off when the filter house lid or door are opened.

    Thanks!

Ours is an all wireless one and I tried moving a sensor from one room in to the filter house as a temporary solution but the signal was not strong enough as the main box is at the very front of the house and the pond is directly opposite side of the house and past an outhouse. Just wouldn’t connect sadly.

I guess I could see if I could run a wired sensor but I’d prefer to have an independent one for the pond just in case the wind rattled the filter lid and sets the whole house alarm off! I wouldn’t be popular...

I added extra PIRs from my house alarm to the shed and filter pit which are around 100 feet from the control box. They work perfectly.

If like me you have a lid on your filter pit (or doors I guess), then you can also add a front door or window sensor to it so if they try to prise the lid open the movement will set it off before they get to the stage of completely ruining the lid prior to triggering the PIR.

The Visonic powermax complete is a good quality wireless house alarm with a long range for PIRs. They are a bugger to set up though which despite being immensely complicated/frustrating to a novice is probably a positive thing.

This is what they look like:

I also have a powder coated heavy duty metal mesh over the pond which is also padlocked down.

Kinda like a hand grenade booby trap! Like it. Maybe once I remember it’s there I’ll change it out for a hand grenade! Would make for a wonderful alarm to wake me up and an added bonus of rendering the would-be thief unconscious thus saving me a job Any ideas on a filter alarm?

Interesting system. Not beyond the realms of having this as an extra system to compliment the one we have already.

The one we’ve got now is some super system thing and I have no idea how to adjust it or add to it so I’d prefer to leave it alone as it does a great job already.

I’m thinking I could install this for the pond and also the workshop and shed too but would need to be able to keep the pond armed at all times but be able to switch off the shed or workshop separately as my in laws dogs like to sleep in there when they come.

With the Visonic do you know if you can arm separate sensors without having to arm the whole thing?

Yes you can. You can assign different sensors to different partitions and then arm and disarm each partition separately, i.e shed on partition 1, garage on partition 2 etc.

This was the part I found most complicated to set up as you should be able to assign different buttons on the key fob for different partitions but for the life of me I couldn't work it out so with mine the key fob arms everything but if I want to arm individual partitions I have to do it from the key pad.

Also you'll need to connect it to the phone line so it will ring you if triggered. I spliced mine into the overhead phone line at roof level so if anyone cut the cable going into the house it would still work. BT weren't impressed when they found out!

By the way.... All the sensors are pet safe so cats and dogs (unless they are huge) won't trigger the alarm, but a person would.

Just thought I would update this thread with where I have ended up for the moment. I will sort a proper system later this year but for now I have bought this little gadget:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B078YPR4XJ/

Superb little bit of kit and very cheap. It's a simple window alarm with a remote fob that I have repurposed to go off when someone opens my filter door.

Works a treat as I have forgotten it's there a few times after installing it and it makes me jump out of my skin when it goes off!!

Looked into these since your last post, but the concern is that foxes and cats will set them off.

How about a Ring camera, I’ve got a couple, you adjust the sensitivity so animals won’t register, but a person would, linked to the Wi-fi, alerts on your mobile phone, you can view the footage. Speak on it and has a siren function that you can set off via your mobile.
