Ask your mate to grab one of these. There are cheaper ones available and they do work just as well but this one just looked like something out of the Terminator franchise so I grabbed it. In the four years of having this pond of mine, they have yet to find a way in. I've watched them on my CCTV cameras I have placed around the property trying to figure a way in unsuccessfully.

We used to quote on the oil rigs.
The same length. From the middle to the end.
And same length from the end to the middle.
Which is twice i suppose.
Heron.
Shotgun comes to mind. Or a good garden dog like my patch. He keeps cats and birds off my main pond.

Funny old world isn't it........we dig a hole, put water in it and just to top it off we then put fish in it, I mean its not like we are encouraging Herons / otters to come and have a meal is it. sadly its what they do.
you just have to put up the best protection you can or afford to protect your fish. Sad I know .

I’ve been using a couple of old CD’s near the pond, suspended on a bit of fishing line, hint of a breeze makes them spin and catch the light, haven’t been bothered by Herons for three years now.

I have a sprinkler - but that one looks a lot better...thanks for the link.
I live very close to a huge reservoir and within 2 weeks of building the pond and adding fish the herons were seen getting closer and closer every day.
Covered pond -
Now need to pluck up the courage to remove covers
At one point the parent was flying over showing the young heron my pond - it was a joke
As a side note - there are some beautiful air rifles available now.
Its a hole in the ground where I throw my money!

Ravens are the best defence - I used to have to net my pond until some Ravens took up residence in our garden- they attack herons and I always leave food for them. They have stayed here for over 5 years now and nest every year.

I will second that. Ravens and crows chase all the seagulls wood pigeon s
From around my backway. Leave the little birds alone. Two trees end of my garden nesting in it.
I wonder if there all from same family line. As they have been there 30 years as long as i have lived here. There is 6 of them
Great for me.Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk

I feel your pain...... I have the river avon next to my house with Herons, Cormorants and other creatures..... Over the years I've tried floating discs, and practically every Heron scarer going including the device that squirts water at them (I've one for sale if you want to try it).
I then resorted to putting up a heron fence, which the RSPB recommended with fishing line round and gradually had to increase line until it was completely covered and a mess!!, but the Heron still came through (weaving through like something out the matrix) he actually used the line to support himself whilst he got fish...... eventually I put a net over the pond 2 inch squares, black, and have had no issues for years. The net is almost invisible, see photo.... net is the only sure way to stop the buggers!!
