I then resorted to putting up a heron fence, which the RSPB recommended with fishing line round and gradually had to increase line until it was completely covered and a mess!!, but the Heron still came through (weaving through like something out the matrix) he actually used the line to support himself whilst he got fish...... eventually I put a net over the pond 2 inch squares, black, and have had no issues for years. The net is almost invisible, see photo.... net is the only sure way to stop the buggers!!

Hi moza - love the picture. Is that one of the atlantic gardens prefabricated ponds? If not and it is real brick can i pick your brain. I'm considering something similar with two windows close together and am considering options for the pillar between them.

Hi Brandlin, yea it is an Atlantica Gardens prefab pond on the top with 4 foot under ground. He did a special for me 3m x 4m with the massive windows on 4 sides, but he then struggled to deliver it, so i ended up doing it all myself with a few mates. I'm going to start a thread on the build next week and the end result, so rather than highjack this thread feel free to pm me, but I wouldn't be much use on your question re pillars..

Had a wonder yesterday to have a look at a few local fishing waters to see what condition they where in and if the carp where spawning etc..

What i did notice was the presence of more herons than usual...
At least 5 herons covering 4 big waters...
Now ive never seen that many within an hr of looking..
One water had two herons screaming at each other.....

So is there more herons about than usual ?

So are there more breeding pairs this year which will mean more chicks and more possible pond attacks..

They eat the frogs on my sydicate lake which is brilliant cause they’re bloody noisy little critters!
I’ve been kept awake all night and found myself thrashing the reeds with a bank stick to shut the little blighters up.
5 minutes later they’re at it again.
Fishing is supposed to be peaceful.
Herons I can live with, Seagulls and Cormorants I’d happily see shot down with a cruise missile.
Where do seagulls come from? Nowhere to be seen until you get the catapult out then they appear from nowhere and snaffle up a bag of dog biscuits in about 5 minutes.
    B’stards they are!!

Ducks never really have a problem with, Swans...don’t get me started on bloody Swans. Beautiful birds they are however they have a brain the size of a pea and it shows. They really are dumb creatures. There were 88 of them one day on our lake..normally there’s 2. Luckily there’s a Swan sanctuary open now not too far away so they’ve taken up residency there...or been scoffed by our European friends

    Aye that i am..
Im a tenchfisher tbh but many decent waters where i live that had a good head of them.
Mainly fish the lift method 99% of the time other 1% just general float fishing....

Speaking of swans aint the buggers huge !

Canadian geese are my blight shite every where bright green crap all over.
Resposible for all that algae bloom in lakes..
    Woggy hens i dont mind.
    The odd duck etc..
But swans are thick like you say inagree insured 100%..
I had a stand off once on our water with one when they breed theres an area sectioned off you cant go near well they want the whole lake..
    So hence the stand off...
Wings flapping, hissing you name it i just stood there and said i aint 3ffing moving mate etc etc etc..
This went on for ages then it got the message but every now n then it would come n chk me out..
Never bothered me again tbh but it started on other members this year but didnt bother me..

I just walk on the water the swan sees me and makes a beeline for me so i just say to it.....you gonna effing behave or what !

    Just leaves me alone.....
Chks out where i was sat when i leave though..

Shine a laser pen on their sides, they don't like that one bit.

I used to love Tench fishing when I was younger, mist rising off the surface of an old estate lake, lillypads twitching, bubbles fizzing, marvelous stuff.
We used to spend all night watching those floats with the red lights on the top. After a couple of hours they'd make you hallucinate lol.
Tench are flipping massive these days too eh? A biggun used to be about 3lb when I was a kid, now they're up in double figures!! Amazing what HNV Carp food has done in some lakes
