Koi pond external camera
Hi
I know there has been loads on this topic before but I have never found an answer to this question. I need a security camera that I can mount externally that will only require plugging in and will pick up the house wifi from inside without any Ethernet cables being required. I'm not too up on such things and want to ensure I order the correct make and model assuming I can find this spec. Plus would like to be able to view camera remotely on iPhone.
Any advice really appreciated.
thank you.

I have a Nest outdoor camera watching my pond which has all the features you are after. Not necessarily the cheapest option though, and if you go with their cloud for storage of video footage there is a monthly price. I already have a Nest thermostat running the central heating so i like having my cameras all in the same app on my phone. It's a true plug and play with HD and night vision, plus it can detect when you are home or away via your phone and customise settings such as receiving email pictures when it detects a person only when you are not home.

HI Ian, Ive been using this Ucam 247 live security camera to overlook my pond for the
last 2 years without any issues. Really good build quality all metal no plastic, o ring seals
which you need for reliable weatherproofing.
Fully wireless except for a 9v power supply feed, just download the free app and you can
view your pond from anywhere you have wifi or 4/3g on your mobile device.
Not the cheapest but I can certainly recommend this one for your purpose.
Regards Mike.

I'm using the netgear arlo outdoor cams. Battery lasts about six months and work well with no issues. I found the nest cams to be pretty good, but the monthly subscription was too high.
ive got six of the cams in total - two outdoor and four indoor. It can be set to record any movement and sends an alert and can can also be viewed by the app on your phone, tablet, computer, etc.

I have just purchased a QNAP NAS (Network Attached Storage) for backups et al which I need. Cost around £500 for NAS box and 6TB of HDD and comes with loads of extra functionality. Both QNAP and Synology NAS come with the security camera app and the QNAP has 4 licences (which you should have). All I need to add is a number of all singing and dancing HD cameras (1080p) that come in around £60 - £120 (yes sixty). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2T36UGwKbg Given the price of a standalone low resoulution video surveilance kit this really costs in. So worth a good look if anyone wants to backup their PC's and have a surveilance system.

Night view from the back garden from the app...I'm planning on adding another cam directly onto the pond when it's completed.

I had a shop, the shop had video surveilance, choclolate was being stolen, we caught the guy on camera. The police said the chance of a conviction was minimal although you saw his hand heading for his poachers pocket with a huge bar of chocolate. Reason - video quality was not good enough for the courts. It wasn't that bad and let's just say better than the photos above!
So you have got to ask yourself - why have video surveilance if you cannot secure a conviction?
Last laugh - extracted a frame from the video and stuck it on the wall behind the chocolate. Wish I had been there when he saw it (and he did). I was going to run it as a video in the shop window - Do You Know This Thief?

Funnily enough, I worked in a shop and cctv captured a guy stealing two cans of beer and it was about the same as above. They charged him and used it as evidence. Second to that, all the new systems send an alert within a couple of seconds and you know what's going on when you're not at home, so it's not just about trying to get a conviction.

Are you looking for wireless security cameras? I prefer wired cameras over the wireless. Wireless security cameras have huge drawbacks.
-The signals get easily interrupted by the bad weather
-It can be easily hacked by someone
-Expensive
-It is more prone to trigger false alarms
Also, cheap security camera doesn’t mean that it has low quality.Sometimes you would get good cameras at a cheap rate. You can have a look at the online services that offer CCTV camera solutions at a cheap rate. Ensure to check the reviews and ratings before buying the products

GSA Rider, No it is about stopping "stuff" like that happening whether it is stealing from a shop or your pond. Stopping it dead by securing a conviction has got to be better than simply moving them on to the next pond/shop/house that they can rob with impunity. Imagine your house is robbed, you know who it is but can do nothing about it! And then think of your neighbour who was robbed two weeks ago and caught them on video but the police were unable to do anything about it before they rifled through you wifes knicker drawer.
However the pond cam is about giving me the peace of mind that everything looks OK.

Naomi, Thanks I do everything wired and have networked everything that I can, PC's, TV, AVR, DVD, BT Vision etc. The explosion of wireless devices (Internet Of Things) also means that bandwidth will run out in peoples home wireless systems (never mind the broadband itself) best experienced as dropouts and watching the downloading thingy on catchup tv. People won't realise it is happening as often but the problem will get consistently worse, now where did I see that internet connected fridge! Some companies now run their own separate wireless networks from their devices (think Sonos wireless speakers) as this is becoming a problem.
Just something for folk to bear in mind when buying their next wirless thing that "Oh just connect it using wireless" applies to.

The issue is that the police are not willing to pursue cases like this anymore - that's more the problem. Not the CCTV footage. The incident I mentioned was 15 years ago.

Police Where I live they don t even turn up for a stabbing. So turning up for a fish. No chance. Get a big guard dog. That keeps them away. Everyone at my last place used to moan at us about my dog barking at night. For a reason. Six months later. Me and the wife got stopped about eight times. Wish you where back living in the street. Why is that I says. We have all been broken in they say. That dog of yours used to warn the whole street we relise now. Best deterrent on the planet.
