Bird Crap
A bunch of local pigeons have started congregating on top of my pergola and there constant crapping is p#ing me off. Lines of crap across my filter covers and I hate to think how much is going in the pond.
I've heard you can stick sand paper or similar to surfaces to prevent them perching, is there anything else that might work?

Do fake owls and hawks actually work? I know fake herons are a waste of time.
It's such a prominent feature that lines and spikes would be a real eyesore, but a tasteful owl might blend in nicely.19,000 litres

I've been blighted by large wood pigeons for a few years Mark. I have a plastic kestrel called Kes that I've hung from a nearby tree with fishing line, it did the trick for a while but then they got used to him. They're back in force now so I've resorted to buying an airsoft gun that fires plastic pellets, it won't kill them but it certainly gives them food for thought and it's great fun to boot!

I was just looking at one of those online. I'm not adverse to a bit of automation and I think fixing one on an actuator to jig it around when triggered by a motion sensor, should be fairly simple. I might have a go at that.
Jim, these are also wood pigeons, and although it's one of the uk bird species it is legal to shoot, and apparently quite tasty too, there are some female members of my family who would definitely cross me off their christmas list if I were to even consider it.
Thanks guys

I would never condone killing them Mark, the airsoft gun is a glorified potato gun really. It ruffles the feathers, more of a tap on the nose shall we say

I had quite an issue with wood pigeons all over the place. On top of the gates, garage roof, etc. I put on the plastic spikes and it's been extremely effective as well as being not too obtrusive due to the semi translucent plastic. I got the 10 metre packs from Amazon:
