Weights for nets
We will be getting a tennis court net to go around the sides of the pond to bounce any further potential jumpers back into the water.
I am wondering what sort of weights I could use for the bottom of it to try keep the tension.
Would the fishing type lead weights be ok as I'm not sure if they would leach into the water?
Syd this is probably one for you.

That sounds pretty drastic!
Usually fish jump either because they want to clear their gills of perceived parasites, or because the water quality has changed and they don't like it. I've never had a fish jump out of my pool in thirty years.
You'd be better off buying black net off a roll from World of Water or similar and threading upright canes through it to support it.
It'd look far less obtrusive.
I've no idea of your situation or whether you've done this, but but I'd investigate the cause of the "jumping."

It had not jumped before when I had been watching it. Subsequently it has died due to the injuries. It was a new koi. I'm suspecting the ammonia was a bit on the high side which I am trying to get sorted but I don't want to go through this experience again.
There is no way I can use canes hence the reason I was thinking weights on the bottom to help hold it in place.

I did a search on eBay for stainless steel weights...... I'm gobsmacked at the results I got back.
Why would a guy want to do that to himself is beyond me....... ball stretchers...... really??!

Laura, have a look in b&m they have nice stiff small hole black garden netting about 1mtr high, dont know how much it is as i got a roll for £1 end of season, going to fit round mine.
If you stretch it taught enough it would be fine.John

This is my net from World of Water, it's really strong, it's pulled tight across the pool in both directions, it ain't "flimsy" you can't tear it, it'd cut your fingers. and it's really unobtrusive. It's just to keep the leaves off. It's at the level of the top of the rocks.
But as they say, "each to their own."

The net I have up at the moment was from Bradshaw's it's small holes and quite "stretchy", I have doubled it over and sewn it to some rope but it's just not right if you know what I mean. It looks messy. Guess I'm just fussy.

Hi Laura,
Have you considered perspex uprights that could be slotted in around the open sides of the pond? I'm thinking of these. Adam Julian (You Tube) uses them on his main pond. They don't need to be too high (maybe 8 to 12 inches). This may look nicer than netting?
Just a thought.
Cheers.
Ian.

Hi Laura,
Here's a screenshot from the video - It's microscopes part 1 if you wanted to view.
Thanks.

Thanks, yeah did think about it but the netting is best bet as it will only be in place when no one around in the garden. Seems a little pointless having pieces only that high, they could still jump over it. I'd have to double the height.

if a sort term measure why not just place bricks on the stone surround, though you can easily rubber coat lead but leads not cheap per kg these days, but your under cover and so lead leachate from it is going to be very small, probably a greater ppb in your supply from legacy pipe work
due to having a small person, im thinking a glass balustrade to make it harder for foreign objects to go in, though would also in the rare event of jumps stop going the other waythe slow pond build thread

You've been given alternative suggestions but, to directly answer your original question, the amount of lead that would leach from lead weights would be negligible.
Can I make a suggestion about whatever netting you decide to use? I once made something similar using garden netting and I supported it with black 1.5 mm single conduit cable threaded in and out through the top holes and tensioned to support the net and another piece threaded through the bottom holes to keep the bottom tensioned.

It's possible to over-think this problem.
The World of Water net comes in different gauges and widths and any length you like.
It would be possible to wrap it around three sides using a small hook top and bottom of the pergola posts and possibly some garden wire threaded around the top bottom of the net where it meets the sides and roof of the pool and make a simple net covered frame out of 2" X 1" to hang on the fourth side for access.
The net would be far less obtrusive, cheap and easy to fix."The information's out there,

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
