As long as the camera connectors are the same you can get black or white cameras to suit, we have both as got the 8 channel system with 4 cameras then got some extra ones to plug in.

I have the Swann setup and like most systems you can watch your pond from anywhere in the world when linked through your router.
Swann also do some very good online videos that explain set up etc.

I've been looking into this a lot over the last week.
The main point to success is choosing the correct focal lens for what you are trying to achieve.
Even a really high megapixel camera with the wrong focal lens might look as if it's giving a great crisp picture but when blown up won't be able to produce pictures that can be used in court.
Here's a good info guide to explain what I mean: Choosing the Wrong Lens - CCTV Information
These cheapo chinese camera sets are a gamble .... some bargains available but if you get a clanger it's still a significant amount of money down the drain.
Anything made by Hikvision (some Swann models are re-branded Hikvision) or Dahau are the recommended "can't go wrong" brands.
If you want to gamble on a cheap set make sure the cameras have a sensor made by Sony.
Anything over 2MP will produce good pictures ..... definitely the most important element is choosing the correct focal lens ... have a read at the link ... that explains it well and gives loads of info ...
P.s. ... one other thing I've picked up on over and over is that analog cameras usually denoted as TVL (tv lines) are totally outdated now .... so you want to be looking at IP cameras which give a much better picture.

Just found a great tool online where you can add cameras and move them and the angle of viewing, width etc. about and it will calculate best focal length lenses etc. over a satellite pic of your property ...
Just tried it for mine and it's really accurate with distances: https://ipvm.com/calculator

Hello
I work for the IT department of large retailer, and we now install Swann CCTV into all our new stores.
We use the images in court and are so much better than most.
Its brilliant for the cost, and I would highly recomment it.
720 is more than enough resolution, the new 4k cameras are amazing, but if you have 8 cameras like we run you will not get more than a week of footage, thats with the motion detector on so it doesnt record at night so outside it will probably record all the time, you can record to a seperate HDD or expand the one you have.
They now do a 16 channel one as well.
I would go for a cat5e system as you only need to run 1 cable to each location and they are supplied if you arent confident in running and terminating your own, but you get a neater job doing it yourself.

I bought a CCTV system for the house & garden a couple of years ago.
Four wireless colour day & night cameras, base unit with built-in screen, records to SD flash drive, motion detection. It was around Ł200.

Did you manage to find a camera setup in the end.
I can highly recommend hikvision cameras, they are sold as entry level pro cameras.
I have the 4mp 2.8mm turret style cameras on my house and the quality is superb especially at night which is where most cameras struggle.
You will find that some of the setups have two cable attachments one being power and one being video.
If you went for an IP camera then only one cat5 cable is required as the nvr (net video recorder) will power up the camera using the same cable it uses for video.
This is called power over ethernet (POE)
Hope this helps
