    Otherwise, keep some reflectors like a mirror. It works for the first 2 weeks but after that, the herons get used to it.

    Get yourself one of these. I have one on my pond and I know I've two of the little buggers hanging around. They dare not come near the pond now once it's turned on and I've had no issues since I've installed one. Runs off batteries and you should get a good year out of them.

    I have got one of these with a different manufacturers name on it and it was priced a lot more - £34 I think. Anyways it seems to work great although it is off at the moment. A heron could neither step into my pond nor get at the fish from the side. Not by design but by dint of the fact that I have walls to keep errant kids from running into it. Maybe my giant mirror would put them off anyway, never actually seen a Heron in the area. Tempting fate - I know!

    The simple answer to your question is yes. I've had my pond now for around a year and three quarters. Since I installed this device, I've not lost a single fish. Before hand, several Goldfish and one 10" Koi vansihed. Worth their weight in gold.
