If you can encourage seagulls and crows into your garden they'll sort it out.

That's interesting. Is that a genuine natural Heron deterrent? We have quite a few crows around us on the fields, etc.

If it is I'll be Googling "what do crows eat"...

Never seen a crow or gull on the ground let alone near the pond.

From someone in the know I'd be interested in your views on snails, birds and tapeworm. I discourage birds from my pond at all cost.

i live in the city. But have lots of grows around here. Plus gulls. The crows chase the gulls away. Which surprised me. There very territorial. And fight in gangs.
plus wood pigeons. They go for them too.

we have a murder of crows in the old oak over the road, they make a bit of noise, but are very smart and able birds and quite fascinating to watch them trying to find ways round problems.

if your lacking the intermediate host, in most cases snails then its not an issue, there are of course some parasites that use birds as a intermediate host, and others that have many more intermediate hosts along the life cycle, its not some thing I lose sleep over, all the snails have now long since been eaten by the carp so I now lack that intermediate host, and with the plants most likely being grown from seed, then they will not be present, As for birds im encouraging them near the pond (though not ducks and waders, just perching birds), Have martin and swallow boxes/ledges to go up on the walls near the pond to benefit from the simuliidae that will be present close to the water. All things that will make many on hear take a sharp intake of breath, but the pond is just one part of the land under my control and I would rather it provided something bigger than just the footprint it occupies, unlike the tanks in the house, all they provide the house is moisture to take out the air ;-) and a some eye candy.

If a fish dies or needs to be killed for what ever reason then I most often do a necroscopy and make the most of the carcass to reaffirm my fish preparation and dissection skills, not something many would do wit a et sure, but when you have been in the industry and see and dealt with death, its not some thing to fear and improving your own skills and knowledge is always useful, especially if getting a few scales and bit of blood on your hands means you can alter some thing to benefit the general population in your care.

When I moved into my property 13 years ago it was inundated with snails, I've managed to greatly reduce their numbers over the years by going out with a torch on wet nights and collecting them along with slugs in a bucket, they then move location via the garden waste bin.
I sometimes see empty snail shells in the flower beds around the pond but seldom birds other than finches and the resident Wren and Robin, maybe because I'll shoo off larger birds if I see them as does the dog.

Take a mucus scrape from your slugs and snails before you dismiss them as not a risk
I cured molluscs with chickens here

Since last summer we have about 4 cats besides ours visiting the garden on a reqular basis..
Our smudge sits on the pond corner most of the day if its not cold.......
She is a brawler our smudge and as seen quite a few moggies ofc over the years even though she is 14yrs old plus she is known for catching a few birds aswell..
So i think if smudge is on guard then the heron aint got a chance....
