I had a visitor in the night
Hopefully these links will work. Had a heron visit at midnight - kin thing fell in to start with, then came back a few more times... Thankfully my fish are ok... Going to have to put something round the top of the pond...

Crafty bugger, I didn't know the hunted at night.
Glad it didn't get any of your fish but I bet it will be back for another go.Alias PWNN - Steve

Hi, I have used a Superfish Bird/Cat/Heron sprayer in my last place, when I had an issue with cats, and Herons. Not needed now in this house.
It worked well. You can get them everywhere, inc. Amazon or Absolute Koi.
You can get cheap sprayers for £20 but no idea what the quality is like, particularly of the IR unit. If I was to buy another, I might consider the Contach which is more expensive, but if you look on Amazon has 450 happy purchasers...
Contech ScareCrow Outdoor Animal Deterrent - CRO-101: Amazon.co.uk: Garden & Outdoors
To avoid getting soaked you need a water time like this:
Programmable Digital Water Timer | Digital Water Timers | Screwfix.com
Good luck with whatever you try, as with Herons its about how determined they are! Cheers

Up here we have started to get a problem with seagulls hunting smaller fish in the last year or so ... even trying to get through netting.
I had a temp "popup" pond with a zip fine mesh cover ... they tore it to pieces early in the morning ... didn't get any of the fish. I couldn't believe it was seagull's till I saw it happen. Seemed to only be 1 or 2 specific gulls you could recognize them. My husband shot them with the kids BB target gun (powerful but not enough to injure them badly) and after a few sore visits they haven't been back ... infact if they perched on the roof after the first couple of hits all we had to do was wave the gun where they could see it and they were off ...

A couple of PIR lights that come on briefly around the pond might be enough to scare it off at night.

Here's one in action next to my pond but it looks a lot brighter in the photo than it actually is.

A pergola would help. Then gives you the option of running fishing line around it too.
I've used fishing line and even an electric fence round my pond for years. I'm hoping my new raised build will be ok if it has a pergola right from the start so they don't get a birds eye view of my fish. Keeping big koi they can't take is the other solution!
