A mate of mine had an heron problem in june.....
He found out after a while that the brightly coloured koi where untouched he/she caught the darker ones.....
He also as a ready made warning system..
A few rooks or crows would readdily start crowing rather loudly when the heron showed up...
He fed the rooks/crows to keep them about...
He as since netted his pond........

Hi
I had exactly the same problem and with a raised pond. I ended up drilling down a hole in each corner and inserting some rods in and circling it with four runs of very strong fishing line and this has worked so far (about a year). The advantage being it is almost invisible, although can be a bit of a pain if you are trying to net a fish, but is virtual no cost to replace. One tip if the pond is sleeper built make the holes a bit too big as the wood will "clamp" on to the rods when damp which is usually just about the time you need to remove them to put covers on!
