Dechlorinator
I have purchased a Vyair 10’’ three stage filter mistakenly thinking I can use it for weekly water changes but at 1.5 litres a minute it will take a whole day to replace 10%!
I can’t do a trickle in out so need another alternative for changes.
Lesson learnt for not checking before buying......

If you do all your water changes in a large amount relatively quickly then it's way easier just to use dechlorinator liquids (or sodium thiosulphate crystals you dissolve yourself).
The 10" 3 pod systems usually cannot even manage the flow rate they advertise without 'passing' some chlorine unfortunately.
The 20" Vyair 3 pods are better, but still wouldn't allow you to do 10% over an hour or two.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Any particular recommendations for a liquid/crystals or are they all the same?

There is a slight difference between some proprietary dechlorinator liquids and buying pure ST crystals. Some dechlors also contain a heavy metal chelating agent. However if your tap water is fit for human consumption then it's usually the chlorine and chloramine you are aiming to get rid of not the other stuff. Pure ST does this job very easily and very cheaply.
If you want to make up your own ST then I tend to follow the recipe of adding 160g of ST in 1 litre of boiled water / distilled water. I then add 10ml of this to the pond for every 100 UK gallons used to top up. This can deal with 1ppm chlorine in the supply, which more than covers likely levels in UK tap water except in exceptional circumstances. If in doubt just add more, there is a massively wide safety margin for the fish with this stuff.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

So once it is made up I can use what is required and then save the rest and use as a liquid in a sealed bottle?

when i had old pond i used to clean nexus twice a week, and empty it twice a clean,i put an auto top up on pond with a 20" 3 pod and had it on a lot more than recommended flow,in essence i was using it to purely take out heavy metals and such, not chlorine,i use the crystal ST and just make up a litre in a squirty top bottle,i never calculated what i put in i just squirted some into pond lol,the crystals are dirt cheap off fleabay and will last you ages, andi

06-09-2018, 12:45 PM #8I hope this helps.I calculated this table for my students who are international so everyone can work in the units they prefer. The shelf life of a made-up solution will vary according to storage conditions and possible introduction of contaminants when opening but, since the crystals are so cheap I suggest making up a stock solution, storing it in a cool and dark place and throwing away any unused solution after a year.

I have been using a Vyair 10" 3 cartridge dechlorinator for years not with the same cartridges in though, I was running mine as an auto top up and was using a flow rate of about 1.5 lpm which is the max for the standard cartridges. Never had any problems with mine letting through chlorine. Well I say never as I've just had to replace a set this week as on my last water test I noticed the quick dissolving DPD4 tablets were starting to turn the sample pink straight away. New cartridges fitted now and tested them at a flow rate of about 1.2 lpm and all OK so far. Vyair sell a set of heavy duty cartridges for the 10" kits so may do the same for the 20" kits and for the 10" the flow rate is rated at 2.5 lpm. Still not that high but OK for topping up.
Looking at the 10" and 20" sets I'm thinking you could convert the 10" to 20" just by replacing the housings and the cartridges as they look identical where the housings screw into the top section. I could be wrong on this but worth an email to get a definitive answer from Vyair maybe?

When adding the ST to the pond am I doing this before after re-filling the pond? Also, am I just pouring the 20mls straight into the pond randomly or do I dilute and pour across pond with a watering can or similar?
