    It's 9.00 am. Thursday.

This and three blokes have arrived to fill the pool. When did you get that sort of service?
Another load to come later today.

They'll be using the ramp I made to get my vinyl jukeboxes into our tea-house to barrow the stuff in.

Actually, it isn't that steep, it's the camera angle.

They'd got this far by noon and went to lunch, waiting for a bigger load to come this afternoon. It's about a third full and it isn't rubble. It'll compact well to support the flags.

Very tidy workmen. "They'll do anything for you if you give them a cup of tea."
That bag is coarse sand and is part of what will go on top of the hardcore, under the flags.

The boss man had greatly under-estimated how much fill was needed. Hard to do it by eye when you're staring down through a lot of water. But he was being quite reasonable about it.
He was on the phone just now negotiating the extra cost, which I thought was quite reasonable as he'd never filled in a koi pool before.

    When I came off the phone, my wife (we both wind each other up a bit, occasionally, but it's all in fun), said with a big grin on her face;

"Is it going to be like HS2?"

To which I replied, "No it'll be finished by the week-end."

The final cost will be a quite a lot lower than I thought it would be, before we decided to fill it in.

Busy day today, the Virgin man is coming to fit an additional box this afternoon.

I arranged it over a week ago. They've phoned three naffin' times for confirmation. Probably my fault as on the first and second occasion, I was expected to talk to a naffin' computer, so I put the phone down. A few days later there was a "real person" on the phone.

The extra box is costing me another £7.50 a month plus £25 installation.

I think I would have opened it up as a local land fill, we did it at work on an old open mine, we opened it up as land fill for inert waste, they charged £80 a load to dump and made absolute thousands of pounds for doing it, all whilst the customer was paying us to fill it and landscape lol

Just a thought on the big fill as a landscaper are they whacking that hardcore every so often. As in my mind if they just filled the whole pond in one go and a wack on the top before flags there is a big chance of sinkage when it settles . . They probably will be but just a thought

Thanks for that., I'm hoping they've got it under control. They did mention that it would have to be well tamped down. Fortunately it's pretty fine and it was damp to start with and it's now raining, so that should help. I'd be concerned if they'd used any rubble at the bottom.

    The job's finished.
    Two and a half days.

Very pleased with the result and what it cost. The paving's a bit bright at the moment, but it'll weather in a bit. I've damped it down and spread in a bit more sand in the joints. I'll wait until it's rained and brush in some more.

Ten of my wife's roses are now in position. They're on pot movers so we can ring the changes,
This leaves just six roses in ceramic pots on the patio with a load of other stuff on the steps.

One of the three men filling it with twenty tonnes of hardcore etc. wanted to know how it was excavated.
"By me, at the age of forty-six, on my own, with a spade!"

I think he was suitably impressed!

I've still my home-made filters and quarantine tank to dismantle and dispose of. The filter room will be used to store some of the stuff that I can't seem to throw away stored in the garage.

    I still have some water.

I ordered a Massarelli stone fountain from the USA. It srrived on a pallet on Tuesday, all 71 kilos of it.
Managed to manhandle it into position with the aid of my trusty sack truck. I'm usuing the electrical supply to the filter pump which was in the empty sump below it. I've connected it to one of the four switches behind the lounge curtains that control the lights in the garden. I disconnected and removed the two 150w spotlights, that were trained on the pool, now redundant and used that switch.

I've re-directed the 30w spot that used to shine on the waterfall, That's now on the same switch.

    Continued, only allowed four photos.

Laid new decking in "The Room" where there was a void having ripped out the filters and quarantine tank..(five trips to the tip with a full boot) Painted the lot.

Decided to take the back-up freezers out of the shed and put them in "The Room" as I now call it, having said "I'll put it in, 'The Room'" about a few things already (rather than "The former pool filter and quarantine tank room"). Mind you the shed in which I keep gardening gear, I built in 1976, for our eight year-old daughter's collection of rabbits and guinea pigs which have seen neither for over three decades, we still call "The Rabbit Shed."

The Rabbit Shed gets very hot in the summer as did the tea-house where they were before, The room is much cooler. It will also be easier for my wife to access them, as there isn't a big step up to get in.

Moved my Budweiser fridge out of the tea-house and found an old kitchen cupboard.I'd had spare since the kitchen re-vamp ten years ago. My wife when she saw it said "Do I need to check the kitchen for missing cupbaords?" (smart ass!)

I'm going to get myself a small kettle, so I can make myself any sort of drink when I'm gardening. Save my wife the effort which is considerable with her MS to keep making them for me.

I've managed to sell off all my pool equipment, the fish are "living happily ever after" in a friend's pool two doors away and no I haven't been to see them but I might do later.

So all trace of this feature in our garden for thirty-three years has completely disappeared. We now have a paved area with ten ceramic pots with roses, it's as if we'd never had a pool. Which when you get out of the hobby is how it should be.

As I'm no longer involved with this hobby, it's unlikely I'll be visiting much. But I wish everyone the best.

I guess "my legacy" is my "Koi's Law" thread, that I see has had over 18,000 hits.
