Help please
I’ve got diseased koi and not sure how to solve the problem directly if somebody can help diagnose and point me to the correct treatment please
White fungus looking spots and redness in places and on body fins and head of at least five of my bigger koi
All fins are in good shape, so not fin rot from what I’ve been told but tbf most of the marks are on body
I have pictures but can’t upload them anywhere if anybody can help with that too
Sorry completely nobody post and not the best first post so I apologise in advance

If you click "Go Advanced" tab at the bottom of the post you're writing it will then give a further option to "Manage Attachments" and that allows you to upload photos from your computer.
If posting from a phone, then install Tapatalk and go on the forum via that, adding photos is then straight forward.
Definitely need photos to come up with a diagnosis, and possibly more info than that, such as water parameters inc. Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, PH and possibly KH too if you have the kit for that.
From there we can create a fuller picture where someone can help identify the issue.
If you have a microscope and suspect the Koi have parasites you could try doing a scrape and seeing what you find.

You’re right, the test strips tend not to be very reliable. Many use the API Freshwater Master Test Kit - you’ll need to order the API KH test separately. Order online, usually cheaper.
Still, posting the results of the test strips will be a start.
It would also be helpful if you could post more info re: your pond set-up i.e. how old is the pond (has it cycled), water volume, no. and size of fish (are they only koi or do you also have sterlet, orfe, etc - may/will make a difference to treatment), filtration and maintenance regime, including water changes. The first thing to check and correct, if necessary, is water quality - not just ensuring your water parameters are optimum and stable, but also the cleanliness of your system. If your water quality is off this may have caused/contributed to the problems you’re now experiencing, and certainly won’t help the fish going forward.
Have you added any new fish to the pond within the last couple of months?
Are you able to scrape/scope the fish? If not, post where you are, someone on the forum may be able to help you with this.
Sorry for all the questions, but the more info you can provide the better people with experience here will be able to help you and your fish.Last edited by LouiseR; 21-09-2019 at 07:20 PM. Reason: Added ?

Thanks for the response I’ll answer as many questions as it takes so keep them coming
My pond set up
720 gallon main pond 3.5ft deep
2 gravity filters and uv
About 15 koi range from 5” to 15”
1 white sturgeon
500litre top pond about 18” deep
1 gravity filter and uv
3 small grass carp
2 small sterlets
2 lilies
Water is fed from the main pond
The small pond feeds into the main pond so all the water is cycled into each other
The pond has been set up 2 years
Water changes probably not as much as I should do tbh about 10% monthly
I don’t have the equipment to do a scope/scrape but I’m in wf9 postcode if anyone can help with this
No fish added for a while now, trying to leave it alone with the cold coming up
My pond
I will do a water check tomorrow morning and post the results for all to see
Thanks

Is that 720 gall or 7200 gall . At 720 I think a bit over crowded and a sturgeon will out grow very rapidly. But a would really up them water changes as there is no volume to really dilute any problems. Imo but am normally wrong

Surely if it was over crowded the ammonia would be high tho?
There maybe less than that I will have a good check tomorrow and get more pictures, there’s loads of space... it looks bare at times imo haha
I’m sure it’s 720 gal
About 7ft x 3.5ft and 3.5ft deep

Hi Ajm
7 x 3.5 x 3,5 is 534 gallons + your smaller pond
I would say 1000 gallons is the minimum for a Koi pond - the smaller the pond they say that the water quality is harder to maintain - if only some of your koi are affected try individual salt baths - I had a fish with fungus on it's right pectoral fin - I used salt baths every three days for two weeks and it sorted him out - good luck

When I see the start of ulcers and fungus.
First thing I ask is bacterial and chlorine.
As said above API test kit needed.
Also you need a microscope. Agree salt bath to start with.
Even though you treat the fish. You need to find out the cause of it.
You have to eliminate the reasons of the cause of it.
Clean the pond floor. Clean the filters. Check for chlorine. And scrape and scope the fish.
If you have QT tank.
0.3 % salt heated to 25c. Then after 5 days
Up the salt to 0.6 %.
If not dip the fish in salt bath.
And you will need a topical treatment kit
For ulcers.
Also check your top pond is clean.
When doing water changes add sodium thiosulphate to kill of chlorine.
