From memory the average koi per volume across this forum was something like 1 koi per 200 gallons but when adding all the non-koi into the equation it was 1 fish per 700 odd litres which I think it's about 1 fish per 150 gallons.

About 4Ē depth in each filter at the bottom with the foams on top
Trickle fed from the top and outlet comes from the bottom of filter to the pond

That is true. The recommendation of 1 koi per 250 gallons assumes you are stocking the pond and allowing enough volume for each koi to grow to adults.

Hence my recent reduction from 12 to 10. Last year they were 12 tiny koi and the 2 I got rid of were bought at 8cm and 10cm respectively. They were still the smallest koi in the pond but I couldn't believe it when they measured 31cm and 34cm this year. I honestly thought they were only about 15-20cm. They grow so fast and you get so used to seeing them every day you don't notice the amount they grow.

Someone posted a chart on here once showing how much body weight and oxygen requirements increase for every 1cm of growth and it was an eye opener.

This isn’t the chart RS is referring to but illustrates what he’s saying - hope the link works - Number of Koi

So in a nutshell Scott. There now getting to big for your system. For 2 years they where
Smaller. So your system handled the stock in fish. Now though your getting nitrite spikes. Which is not good for the fish at all.
At the start of the thread I quoted we need to find the problem. I think we are at that point. Your fish have out grown the system.
So you either have to upgrade your filter system. To handle the fish stock.Or get the stocking of fish down. I know it's hard mate. But if not you will keep having problems. Everyone who is helping is very
Experienced. And they have all more or less said the same thing.
You obviously care a great deal. Or we would nt be talking on this topic now mate.

I don t know about anyone else on here.is the same.
My pond is in water volume. 45000 gallons main pond. And 500gallons top pond.
I only count the full total 5000 gallons
    For treating.
But my main pond for fish living in. I count as 4500 gallons. So in other words.
For stocking fish. My pond size is 45000 gallons. Not 5000 gallons.
Hope that makes sense. The water is there in upper pond. But there not swimming and growing in that 500 gallons of water volume.

Looking into making a spare 6ft water butt we have into some sort of filter as additional filteration.
    1. Good or bad idea?
    2. Whatís the best stuff to put in there?

Would probably be fed from the top threw layers of media and then the outlet at the bottom returning to the pond

    Advice? Help pleaseHelp please

Looks like you have had a ph crash and need to add sodium bicarbonate to bring the ph back up to a safe level, not sure how much you need to add but the manky sanke website will tell you, I've added the link but not sure if it will work
