That’s what I thought Freddy - scrape/scope the QT fish before treating with PP again, if clean return to pond which is being treated for Costia anyway. Then I wondered whether this might come uncomfortably close to mixing medications for the QT fish, as in the pond just treated with FMG and the QT fish with PP? If the QT fish is clean I might leave it in QT till the FMG dissipates, but perhaps I’m overthinking things. If it’s not clean others need to advise you on continued use of PP in the QT - I’ve never used it and wouldn’t, personal preference based on the ease at which things can go wrong if not properly handled and dosed.
It would be helpful to know the make of FMG that you used - is it the Cloverleaf Answer products mixed? If you are planning on re-dosing I would scrape/scope several fish before doing so.
Formalin in particular can be hard on fish with open wounds - keep a close eye on your Matsuba. Did you manage to source the Baytril that Paula recommended for this fish?
Keep the UV off for at least 7 days after treating with FMG.
CT is Chloramine T.
If I was you I would only feed pretty sparingly during the course of treatment - if at all.
As Anne said keep lots of extra air going to the pond during treatment, FMG, particularly Formalin, is an oxygen scavenger.Last edited by LouiseR; 06-09-2019 at 08:13 PM. Reason: Sp

Hi
I scraped the matsuba again this evening and I’m still trying to get the hang of the microscope but I could see quite a few perfectly round black circles with stuff inside then my first thought was trichodina but it didn’t look exactly the same.
Any ideas?
I’m trying to work out how to connect my laptop to the microscope so I can post pictures, hopefully tomorrow.
The malachite and formalin that I’m using is Cloverleaf Answer and I’ve followed the instructions on the bottles

Gelkoi, first, all credit to you for trying to identify what might, or might not, be affecting your koi through scraping/scoping. It’s not easy and many don’t attempt it. Pics of what you’ve found would be really helpful. Second, don’t panic! You’ve FMG in the pond which should be effective against a number of parasites, if that’s what you have. Cloverleaf recommend re-dosing after 7 days if necessary, so you have a bit of time to figure out what is going on. As Anne said earlier where are you? A kind soul on the forum local to you may be willing to help you out. Meanwhile, how are your water parameters and how are your fish behaving (also, I’ve probably missed this, but your pond volume, no. of fish and filtration info. might be helpful going forward)?

Hi
Pond volume is 11,000 litres and very lightly stocked as I had a complete wipeout last year
All of the fish are feeding except the Matsuba although he is swimming around now.
I did a water change at the weekend
My water levels are fine
0 ammonia
0 Nitrite
A little Nitrate
KH is 7
PH is 8.0
I live in Epsom in Surrey so if anyone fancy’s popping in for a coffee and a chat about koi I’d be grateful
I’ve been treating the quarantined fish with PP every other day and the last course will be tomorrow then I’ll change the water over the course of the next week before I put him back in the pond
Yes Fred that’s exactly what I saw, thanks
I scraped the Matsuba again at the weekend and it was clear so I’m only certain of seeing 1 skin fluke so far

Sounds good mate. What filters have you got. And have you had a look to see if there nice and clean.
Also do you trickle in and out. And also when doing water changes. Do you use a de_ chlorine chemical. A lot of us on here use ST Crystal's. Also if it is 3 pod filter do you test the water for chlorine. Before adding water to the pond. When changing water.
Also do you purge your pipework once a week to flush crap out.
Sorry for all the questions mate. Reason I am asking is because you mentioned you lost a lot of fish last year.
And I am trying to fathom out why.
stress on the fish causes a lot of problems. And one of the questions could be the cause of this.
And I would nt want to see you pack it all in.
As you have shown you care about your fish

Hi Fred
Thank you for all the questions, I thought I knew a fair bit about keeping fish until I joined up. The knowledge on here is fantastic
I have a spin-drifter 4 inch bottom drain that goes to a 50 gallon vortex then into a tank with a line of brushes and then jap matting then into another tank that is filled with Alphagrog
I flush the vortex and first chamber every week whilst doing the water change.
My levels have been fine all summer
I think the problem I had last year was a classic too many big fish too soon, but I had no choice as someone was clearing a pond that was leaking and had a busted filter.
I use Kusuri dechlorinator when I do the water changes.
I had 2 fish survive last years costia outbreak.
Just a theory but is it possible that these 2 fish are immune to it but carried it through this year and now it’s spreading onto the other fish now that temperatures are dropping?
Cheers
Gerry

I did nt know you had costia before. That answer s that. On last years loss.
If like you say your parameters are all ok.
That's why I asked for the chlorine side of things. Because costia gets the weak fish.
Who s immune system is down. And I wondered if chlorine was affecting them.
To stress them.
You sound as though your doing every thing right as in water quality with what your saying. So good on you.
Have you added any new fish lately. If not
Looks like you have just been unlucky.
I had flukes. Then got whitespot this year.
So unlucky year for myself as well.
But this is how we all learn mate.
And your right mate. It is a great site for knowledge.

Hi
I just got home and checked on the fish
Everything in the pond is okay but the fish in quarantine has died
He was swimming around this morning
His tail looks a bit ragged and his eyes are sunken
I’ve scraped him and had a look but I can’t se anything other than he’s got a brownish mucus on him
I’ve attached a picture

Thanks mate
When I got hone tonight I noticed another fish not joining in feeding with the others
I’ve treated the pond again with Malachite and Formalin as it’s been 7 days since the last treatment
Is there anything else I can do?
I’m going to do another scrape at the weekend but I’m not convinced I’m using the microscope properly
I know for sure that I saw a fluke but am I likely to see anything else at that magnification?

The first picture looks like an ulcer wound but it also looks like its healing well.
Have a read of the link posted but if i were you and there were no emergencies I'd step back and concentrate on the water.
Ensure its not putting any further stress on the fish and leave them alone for a few days to see if they'll get back on the feed properly.
Medi koi health would be my offering.
I can't help getting the feeling with everything you've been doing that maybe it's just time to wait a few days to see how effective its been.

I'm far from an expert.
Should change my username to "all the gear but no idea".
I read that open wounds like that usually start from ulcers then the bacteria get in and eats away at the flesh.

Gelkoi - to me, the fish in your most recent post (#58) appears to be suffering from a bacterial infection that, if untreated, may or will develop into an ulcer. Bacterial infections can be primary or secondary to a parasite infestation and aren’t easy to treat - the link in Solvent Cement’s post to fishdoc.co.uk, plus search for ‘Bacterial Fish Diseases’ on the same site will give you some idea.
Koi & Water Gardens Ltd are, I think, in your area and provide expert pond-side assistance - Homepage - Koi Water Garden - perhaps you might call them out to help you through this?
Solvent Cement - I suspect you were referring to the Matsuba in the original post whereas Anne may have been referring to the QT fish that died in post #53, which didn’t have any signs of an ulcer.
