Problem with koi's mouth...
One of our fish has been off his food for a while, since our heron problem began and we lost a few fish. A few weeks ago I noticed a white lump on his nose which I've tried to monitor. When he's out and about he's swimming around quite normally but he's generally been quite evasive, hiding away most of the day or hanging around by the most inaccessible part of the pond. I was tempted to net him for a good inspection, but was worried I'd set him back a bit if the heron incidents were indeed to blame. I decided to leave him alone, but think that was a mistake...
Today he's back on his food, but when he came to the surface I had the first opportunity to have a good look at him... Very concerned by what I've seen. Please take a look at the photos... I'm very grateful for every bit of advice.

Sorry... should have added that all the pond parameters are good and the other fish appear absolutely fine.

Hi Fatgus
If it's an open wound then it's treatable with a product that carp anglers use to apply to the wounds that they treat when they catch carp on fishing venues - Korda do a simple application that is water proof with anti virus and antiseptic properties it would mean catching the fish and applying the treatment and then return to the pond your local fishing tackle shop will stock various brands which all do the same thing

Thanks Kev. I'll see what I can pick up tomorrow.
To me it looks as though some of his top lip has been eaten away...

Hi Fatgus
Carp in fisheries suffer a lot of injuries at this time of the year spawning and I know a lot of guys always carry this stuff to help them heal once they are caught and returned.

Thanks Freddyboy. Unfortunately, I don't have a QT... whatever the treatment he's going to have to stay in the pond

You can still do it gus. Temps are still good for pond. So fishes own healing will still work.
My treatments where in winter.
Plus 22c 24c speeds it up thats all.
And the salt.
Your pond way will still work. Just slower
I pp the mouth about four times over about a month.
One fish its flesh grew back but if you look at it hard the mouth is slightly deformed
The other one. It grew back normal
But it was nt as bad
Good luck with it mate

Thanks Freddy.
Picked some of the treatment this morning.
Managed to net him within about five minutes... Expected to take a lot longer. Applied the treatment liberally around the wound... It looked quite nasty. If I'd had my phone on me I'd have taken a photo but didn't have the foresight
He was back in the pond within a minute and swimming around with the others. I think I'll repeat the treatment in maybe five days and will try to take a photo so I've got something to compare with. Then the same every 5 days or so until he's hopefully recovered.
It's a lesson learned the hard way. I'd largely dismissed his behaviour as a response to a few heron attacks. In retrospect I should have given him an examination... Won't make that mistake again

Nice one mate. Sounds like a plan.
We all live and learn.
Mine took about 6 weeks to come good. And transfare to the pond.
The hard part is if you have shy fish.
And when they don t come up a lot.
There hard to keep an eye on
Good luck mate.

Just a quick update... fed the koi this evening and for the first time in weeks, Larry came begging along with the others. His top lip looks pretty grim, but he's certainly got his appetite back.
I'll keep treating as planned and hopefully he'll continue to improve and heal.
Thanks for the advice Kev and Freddy... very much appreciated

Hi Gus
Good to hear he or she is on the mend as a feeding koi is usually a healthy fish - as the water temps improve the fishes immune system will do the rest just need to keep applying the paste to keep the wound clean.

So for the last three days I've been trying to catch Larry. He's a totally different fish... sociable, eating well and, unfortunately for me, quick and alert. His nose/mouth are healing well.
As much as I want to apply another treatment, if I can't catch him I'm a bit snookered!
I did contemplate buying a really, really big net...

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
