    Help please - see pictures

I have two injured or ulcers. It is very difficult to post a meaningful thread because pretty much every descriptive word appears to be a tag! It has taken me a few days to realise how serious this is because the water was very green due to UV breakdown. I replaced the entire unit at the weekend and is clearing fast. Parameters are well within range suggested by my comprehensive test kit. But I will test again tomorrow and post. Pond has been treated with Medifin at correct dosage for volume today. This was based on advice from local Koi and aquatics dealer.

Both active and feeding fine. No flashing.

I have appropriate nets but my bowl has been "borrowed" and I won't get a new one delivered until Wednesday.

White one problem is near its left eye. Photos below. White 1.jpgWhite 2.jpgWhite 3.jpg

I have no other medications except the Medicine already added. However, I can go and buy whatever I need tomorrow. I do have a microscope and slides. What I don't have is experience of scrapes or identifying diseases.

I am located near Tonbridge in Kent. Happy to call a fish vet but these seem barely to exist.

25% water change was done a week ago when the UV unit was replaced. Water come from the tap added at low flow rate through a 1 Metre carbon filter.

Both fish are about 40cm. They have been in the pond for 9 months. Pond is 18 months old. Filter is mature EV Aqua unit. Pond is clean - no detritus in the bottom.

I have only ever had one fish loss and that was 3 weeks ago, a small fish, circa 6", with no visible signs of injury or disease.

Thanks Dave. I will do that tomorrow.

Although I did not put this in the threads above, I have a worry that the source of this is a Heron strike. The pond is netted, but about three weeks ago something managed to force a hole in the net and there was a lot of bird poo adjacent.

I am careful with water quality, and the pond has no sharp objects anywhere.

We have a large carp fishing lake in the land adjacent to us, and a stream down one side of our garden, so we are Heron and seagull central.

We also have several other ponds full of wildlife.

Maybe... but it could be that something is irriitaing them, the odd flash, bruise then infection.

Feedback. I have taken advice from two sources as recommended. CCTV (which I previously forgot to look at) confirms Heron attack on the pond, but camera angle is such that I cannot see which fish were affected. Hole in net is definitely caused by the Grey Heron.

Both fish are bigger than I thought by about 10cm, (I had to buy a tank to treat them in and used a measuring tank whilst I wait for my replacement bowl to arrive) and have been out of the water today and treated with NT Labs paramedic kit, which I was impressed with for £20 (not that money was the issue - this is what Koi Water Barn at Coolings had). No evidence of gill issues or any other problems. Both returned to pond and mixing / swimming / feeding fine. I do not have a QT tank but will have to think about this for my next stage of development.

Scrapes and microscopic examination show minimal level of flukes. binocular No other problems spotted, but I am no expert as this was my first time using the Leica binocular scope for fish biology.

Water parameters checked. Ph is 7, Nitrite is slightly elevated at 0.25 (which I am dealing with), zero ammonia, Nitrates very low. Water hardness normal for this area of Kent (fed from Bewl water). Everything else on test kit in optimum range. Water completely clear. Pond temp 20 degrees C at 4pm.

Pond vacuumed and bottom drain flushed three times. Full filter clean performed and 25% water change through de-chlorinator. Additional dose of filter bacteria booster added to pond filter media.

Net repaired and Heron scarer back in action.

    Fingers are crossed.
