Koi Issues - red skin and 1 bloated
Good evening,
I decided to check my fish this afternoon as I am planning on visiting cuttlebrook on wednesday to look / purchase some new fish for the summer. I have a few Koi with carp pox but these two koi seem to be in a less than ideal state.
The black and white one has pink under its white, although is still feeding and doesn't seem to be sulking, flashing or anything like that.
The assagi feels bloated to the touch. Eggs and also has pink under its white. It also appeared to be very slimy in comparison to other fish.
I have done some scrapes and I haven't found anything. There might be something there that I am missing but nothing is jumping out at me.
Any ideas moving forward?
Water tests have come back at Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0 and Nitrate about 30. Nitrate is about 30 in my tap water.
I am running a Drum filter with a K1 moving bed and a constant trickle into the pond.

Don't be disheartened about the lack of replies - someone who's experienced this will come along eventually.
Red rashes can be parasites (secondary infection), bacterial, water quality or even UV related. I'm not sure how to pinpoint which.
A scrape would probably be the first port of call to see if you can find anything under microscope.

What were they like in the pond before netting, bowling and scraping? I ask as the experience of such can be real stressful particularly if the fish isn’t used to it, some fish cope better than others.
Ifthe water is good and there is nothing showing on scrapes, the fish are behaving normally then;
Waterwise;
You don’t mention KH or pH, is there possibility the pH is swinging? This can cause the fish to flash or sulk at first and last light? Test of pH and KH can rule this out.
Is chlorine or chloramine getting into the water?
Do you use a decent carbon filter for topping up or rely on dechlorinator? If you use a filter then have you tested the output with DPd4 tablets?.
There could be another pollution issues but cover the basics first.
Looking at the pics I am not convinced the issues are from the same cause.
I would guess the Doitsu could be over heavy with eggs or potentially has an internal issue.. That is a guess. Really need a view from the top of the fish.
The shiro looks like straight stress or the results of flashing.
Options wise try and get to the root cause by some more testing.
Immediate term, potentially you could look toadd a light dose of Chloramine T at say 1gm per 100 gallons for a couple of days (UV off) to try and mitigate the prospects of bacterial infection setting in..Last edited by Davej; 14-05-2019 at 08:00 PM.

Update:
I done some more scrapes today and I actually found some flukes. This is the first time I have ever found anything so quite chuffed on that front.

Hi DaveJ,
Thanks for the reply. I must admit they were quite slow at come up for food. Especially now that I have put some Fluke Solve in. 6 hours later and they have all perked up.
Your right, I didn't check PH or KH. I will try and do these tomorrow. I trickle in through a carbon filter and I do add Sodium Thiosulphate too. I will order some DPd4 tablets to make sure.
I will do some more scrapes to make sure there is nothing else, but will tackle the flukes first.

Whilst flukes can be a real bugger to get rid of, I'm glad you have found a potential cause.
Lets hope the Fluke Solve does its job.

So all seemed well after the fluke solve and fish seemed happy redness has started to go and I have noticed a couple of fish flashing today. Will do some scrapes tomorrow.
How often can i treat with flukesolve if they are still there? Or should I try something else?

See what the scrapes come up with first and if you do find flukes still keep checking the slide in case there's anything more serious on them.
Check your water first to be sure its not an ammonia spike causing the flashing now that they are more active again.
If you do find flukes you can treat Fluke Solve again, I've used it 3 times in a Month before with only 10 - 20 % water changes in between.

Yes it does get expensive.
This year after 2 failures treating for flukes, I eventually added Chloramine T to the pond (1 gram per 1000 litres), left it for 24 hours with UV off, then treated for flukes.
This had the effect of removing the Koi's mucus coating giving the fluke treatment a better chance of success. It worked.
However, It's not something I'd outright recommend for you at present as your fish have been through a lot already and they could probably do without the extra stress of yet another treatment.

So I done another scrape on a couple of fish and found Flukes again. Nothing else. So I have treated with fluke solve again. Last time I done it was the 14th, so hopefully this is the last time!
Cheers for all the comments so far.

So today I went to do some scrapes and my chag was bobbing around the pond. Not looking to happy, very bloated. Unable to stay upright. All other fish seem okay.
Scrapes on this fish and a load of other showed nothing. Looks like the flukes have finally gone! Yay.
Water tests:
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate 40ppm
GH = 9
KH = 8
PH = 8.2
Anus looks very swollen:
Thanks

Doctor google is pointing towards dropsy.

Scales dont look rised which would have pointed to dropsy so with a bit of luck it might not be . Had some thing similar a few days back havnt made the one call I need to but after a few chats a few people have come up with a spawning problem fish was swollen sat on the bottom of pond and massive swelling around the vent
