    White spots

    Morning,

Was hoping someone could help me i.d these white spots, do they look like ich?

The trouble is, there is no treatment locally, the only real shop that knew anything about koi and ponds closed it doors last week, and we have a postal strike until Wednesday. The best case seranio for delivery would be Monday but more likely tues or onwards

    TIA

Do you have a photo of the fins? Its much easier to give a solid diagnosis when its on the fins.

It doesn't look like white spot disease to me because I've never seen it that badly before on a fish that is still alive, and I've never seen it cover the eyes like that.

On the other hand the spots on the body at the very right of the photo do look similar to white spot disease, so we can't rule out a possibility of both white spot disease AND fungus.

Definitely need more photos especially a well focused one covering the fins. White spot nearly always attacks the fins far more than the body.

By the way, depending on the ultimate diagnosis and if you can't buy treatment, Salt is very good at killing white spot disease.

Thanks, got another photo which shows it a bit better. The fins seem largely unaffected
One of the other fish is also displaying spots on around the head.

I put some blanket weed treatment in about 3 weeks ago, don't know if this has any influence on things?

It's hard to tell what it is but I don't think its white spot if not on the fins of any fish. Fins are virtually always targeted by white spot.

Does look a bit like cotton wool fungus, but could be excessive mucus production trying to protect itself from a parasite.

More info might help edge towards the right treatment.

Is water tested and changed regularly?
Any recent water quality issues, i.e are all parameters perfect and how long have they been perfect for?
    Any new fish added?
    How many fish affected?
    Are you overstocked?

In a perfect environment with perfect water conditions and regular water changes koi / goldfish generally look after themselves. If that is the case here then as familyman says, a scrape would be the next step.

No no reason fish, very lightly stocked.paramenters ok. And has had extra regular water changes due to a weeping waste valve on the filter.

Currently 3 fish showing signs, it does look more mucasy than it did. The guy at the aquarium shop reccomended meth blue and salt, which I could do no problem in the DIY QT tank

I don't know of anyone who could do a scrape for me, a scope is on my shopping list but don't have one at the moment

A lot of people don't like using salt, but for me personally I'm happy to use it.

Methylene blue and salt in a QT tank would fix fungus, if that's what the white patches are.

The one thing to bear in mind is that fungus is virtually always a secondary infection following a parasite invasion such as white spot, or ulcers / wounds etc, or poor water quality and stress. Thus ideally you need to know the primary problem that led to it which is where the scope would come in.

If I was in your situation without a scope and all the fish are small, I probably would put them in a QT tank and treat with methylene blue and salt.... but some will definitely consider that a reckless move without having done a scrape.

If you'd recently bought the fish then I'd be confident the treatment would work, if they are fish you've had for a while and this condition has started to develop then you need to find the route cause.

All looking good and happy. For me it has certainly highlighted the need for a QT tank, makes treatments and check ups far easier
