Dusky look all over black koi

One of my koi has what I can only describe as a dusky greyish look over its black areas. Doesn’t seem lethargic but there is maybe a small white patch on its side. What’s the best treatment for this and do I need to turn uv or pumps off when using. I also have a sturgeon in the pond. Quick advice would really be appreciated

    thanks

Your koi may be producing extra mucus on its body to protect itself from possible parasites. Best do a scrape on this koi and at least 3 others to find out what you've got and best course of treatment
5000 Gallon Fibreglassed Pond With 54" x 27" Infinity Window
    BD300 Drum Filter
    Artesian 0.5hp - Aquadyne 4.4c Beadfilter - PS4 Protein Shower
Badu Eco Touch - EP20 UV Sterilizer - ASHP - Venturi
Hi Blo 60 - Medo 45 - Spindrifter Bottom Drain
    Wide Mouthed Skimmer

Ok to be honest never done a scrape before so not happy doing that. What about just using an all round parasite treatment 5 day course ?

You really should scrape to see what your dealing with.
I had the same issue not long back and I had never scraped any fish before.

I just took my time and it wasn't as bad as I had thought.

I found costia and treated for it.

you need a scrap and quickly ,m thetre is no all round treatment so you really need to know what parasite your healing with . do FULL water test , also you need a microscope , you cant keep koi without 1

I have a microscope just not sure what I’m looking for. Why are there products for sale on Amazon with 5 star ratings if they don’t work. Not everyone who keeps koi can possibly know how to do a scrape or identify a parasite. Not trying to be obstructive or argumentative but there has to be an easier solution ( excuse the pun ) for a relative newbie ?

Have a look on youtube may give you an idea as to how to do a scrape and
to check what parasite you are dealing with if any.....

If only one Koi is affected and is otherwise acting normally and the white patches look kind of waxy, and the pond is unheated and the pond water parameters are perfect (i.e zero ammonia, nitrites etc) it might be Carp Pox which should resolve itself as temps warm up.

If water parameters are or have been poor and you have not been doing regular water changes it could be fungus.

If all of the above is ruled out then its quite possibly mucus production as an attempt to protect itself from parasites. In this case only a scrape will give you the definitive answer.

If you have a microscope you are already 80% of the way there..... as anne says, look at some youtube videos showing how to do a scrape.

The microscope will save you so much time and money if you can make a diagnosis from it.

A lot of treatments for sale are not much more than snake oil and the good reviews baffle me at times.

I am in Bardsey which is in between wetherby and Leeds. One of my fish does have carp pox but it settled right down after the stress of the move into my pond. Fish and water parameter seem totally fine. I will give a few days and see what happens unless someone very kind lives locally and wants to come help out a newbie

Unless your pond is heated, or you quarantine the affected fish and raise the temperature. Most treatments will not be much use.
