Raised scales, bloated
Hi my sanke has become very bloated and lethargic, I’m concerned because she had been full of heath up until two weeks ago, we noticed raised scales and the lop sided nature then the her bloated body, I’ve been doing some research and it’s either a tumour 9 times out of ten it’s this apparently, or egg laden and hasn’t spawned so ingesting these will take time. Has anyone ever used a vet for tumour removal in the London area? Maybe constipated?? Water quality is good and 1760 gallon outdoor pond is fed by E A carbon trickle. I’d love to know anyone’s thoughts on how this can be resolved good or bad. Thanks in advance

Hi Stephen , it would help if firstly to tell us your water readings nitrate ,nitrite ,ammonia etc it would also be worth if possible bowling the koi in a blue bowl ( but cautious as you don't want to add anymore stress if possible ) . This could also be Dropsy look that up and see what you think .
hope this helps

Hi Stephen I know you won't wanna here this ,cause I've been there , if your pond is stocked with Koi, then your Eazypod can't handle the waste I was there last year I had to really cut down my feeding to virtually nothing to keep the levels down I ended up getting a good deal on nexus 310 here on the forum . Sorry to be bearer of bad news but speak from experience . To post pictures pal in the quick reply box on the top line one box in from the right you'll see a picture next to two worlds press that and follow on from there .

Hi steve. I agree with colin.
I had 2x easy pods on a 2000 gallon pond. And they both struggled. As the fish got larger. So i built new pond and changed the filterstion.
I also have an easy pod on a 500 gallon qt and grow on. And on its own that struggles. So had to add 2x bio media butts. After the easy pod.
Now it does the job.
The shop sellers will tell you anything to get a sale.
As an example they say a 5000lt pump will push this around your pond.
In reality its pushing about 3000.
They don t tell you about friction loss. Bends in pipe work . head loss.and all that stuff.
I know you mean well and want the best you can do for the fish.
We all do.
But as the fish grow. The filteration needs changing to the size of the fish and amount of fish and the amount of food they will then require.

Hi Steven im sorry but have to agree with the above about your filtration it's not adequate as a stand alone filter. As for the fish well it's in a poor state & the redness could indicate a bacterial problem. You need to give us your water parameters as that would help & also your cleaning regime on the filtration. The more information you provide the better the advice you will receive.

So this Koi has almost certainly got dropsy (water retention / oedema). I assume the eyes are slightly bulging, can you confirm?
Dropsy is a symptom that can be the result of a whole host of causes, usually water quality being the common culprit which leads to bacterial infections or just Kidney Failure. Being egg bound can do the same.
By the time the fish is displaying raised scales AND bulging eyes, as far as I'm concerned its too late as internal organs (Specifically Kidneys) are shutting down.
Loads of stuff all over the internet about people who know people who claimed to have cured Dropsy, but I've never witnessed a single case or seen any documentary evidence of a dropsied fish with bulging eyes to make a full and lasting recovery. If anyone here knows different I'd be very interested to learn.
I have personally caught dropsy in very early stages on Goldfish before and managed to assist a recovery (dosing with Salt in a hospital/quarantine tank, and feeding shelled peas/yoghurt etc), but ultimately it always comes back and the fish dies within 3 to 6 Months.
Check your Koi's eyes and if they are puffy or bulging I doubt a full and lasting recovery will be possible.
If the eyes aren't bulging your next problem is finding what bacteria has caused it to find appropriate antibiotics which yet again is not an easy task, which leads us back to the beginning - Salt, yoghurt/peas and immaculate water in the hope it can self recover.Last edited by RS2OOO; 26-08-2018 at 01:37 PM.

Hi all, unfortunately the koi did not survive the ordeal, I had to euthanise unfortunately. All my water parameters seem normal but the change of filter may not have helped the situation. Definitely going to change to a new filter system (again) next spring. All my other koi have no symptoms of dropsy and are behaving as normal. Now back from Canada so I’ll continue my water changes and normal routine form now until spring. Must admit I was a bit hasty with my purchase of eazy pod auto after due consideration should have gone for the minema (next purchase ) been racking my brains as to how to connect a second mechanical filter to the eazy pod but I think it’s not viable, open to suggestions, anyway thanks everyone I’m one fish down and have gained some really good advice. Regards Stephen
