Help
Hi
I have had my pond set up for a while now and it has been stocked with 6 large koi that I have been given and some smaller ones that have been bought recently and a couple of goldfish.
All of the fish are feeding okay and the water tests are all fine
Pond tests 29/6/18
Ammonia. Is 0.0mg/l
Phosphate is 1.0mg/l
Ph. Is 7.5
Nitrate is 20mg/l
Nitrite is 0.5mgl
KH is 6
On one of the newest koi I have noticed what looks like an ulcer just where it’s tail meets it’s body ( please see attached picture)
I have also noticed a couple of fish, flashing at the bottom of the pond
Can anyone please advise me as to the best course of action
I don’t really want to just go to the local garden centre (Maidenhead aquatics) to ask advice.
I would be really grateful if anyone can help
Thanks.

Hi, give Des Harris a ring
https://koihealthandpondcare.co.uk/author/des-harris/
He can do some scrapes for you, advice on treatments and show you how to treat the ulcers.
Good Luck

Help
Hi,
Your nitrite is a bit on the high side which isn't good. If you are feeding then stop for a week or so and do some decent winter changes.
Would be worth testing your tap water parameters.
Also check for chlorine using dpd4 tablets.
The problem on the fish is an ulcer which will need topically treating with something like the kusuri ulcer kit, if you can get it in a hospital tank with a buddy with salt and heat will help heal it up.
You also need to get skin scrapes done and examined under a microscope. It's well worth buying your own scope and getting used to using it. You can get an apex practitioner off Amazon for around £118.
Don't treat blind.

Sedate your koi with Kusuri Masuizai. Read the instruction for doseage but never leave the fish unattended.
A koi may take seconds to go under or minutes .
Wipe the area dry with kitchen towel
Clean the wound with Hydrogen Peroxide using an ear bud (cleans the wound)
Dab the area dry with kitchen towel
Apply NT Labs Ulcer Swab (Antiseptic)
Then maybe Tamodine (Antiseptic)
Seal the area with Orasive Powder (Keeps the medication from washing off)
Finally Spray with Propolis (Seals the whole lot)
Work confidently and have all your medications prepared beside you
Dont panic or get flustered.
To bring the koi back round place him in the return water from your filter or by an airstone
Please remember you are sedating your koi and there is a small chance it may not come back round.
This goes for professionals as well as hobbyists.
The tail is a hard area to treat and cure so it may take a few treats to clear.
The next thing to find out is why the koi got an ulcer in the first place.
Are you doing enough water changes and pond maintenance
Is this any debris or dirt in the pond.
You can treat your koi. Its not hard and we all have to start somewhere in treating koi.
Good luck and hope this helpsLast edited by Andy1671; 02-07-2018 at 06:17 PM.

I second the comment on getting a microscope.

Thanks for the advice
I have got the fish out and put her in a quarantine tank
I cleaned the filters yesterday and did a 10% water change and I haven’t seen any flashing since
This might seem like a silly question but is there a special salt to use in the quarantine tank and how much should I put in?

Make sure she isn't on her own.
You need to use PVD salt (pure vacuum dried).
Check parameters daily to make sure things don't go awry.
