    Chilodenella

Right I've finely found the issue on my sick fish. What's the best coarse of action?

    Thanks J

    malachite and formalin.

Be prepared for the worst - Chilo is a real nasty critter particularly if it has got a decent hold.

Loads of extra air, particularly in the first 18-24 hours when the formalin is active..

If you have sturgeon or orfe you will need to remove them for 24 -36 hours.

Is this the best treatment or is salt an effective method?

I've never used malachite or formalin before, neither have I ever salted the pond.

IMO M&F is the best treatment for Chilo. Chilo isn't anywhere near as common as many of the other critters that we see but it is one that when it rears its head demands respect. Are you confident Chilo was identified?

If you went with salt then best used in combination with malachite at half oz a gallon salt and a standard dose of 10ml of 2% malachite per 176 gallons. or alternately used in combination with ICC from Product Page. I have used ICC in the past with success for Chilo. Acriflavine in powder form in combination with salt is another option I have used successfully - but you will find it difficult to source.

On its own salt isn't a recognised front line treatment for Chilo, I guess if you were bold and increased the dose to 0.9% (1 1/2 oz per gallon) you may have success but that would be well off radar for me ..

Were there any Costia present on the scrapes? I ask as Chilo and Costia do tend to go hand in hand, as a fish gets weaker from the Chilo the Costia then seem to move in.

I think I've caught it early as it only appears to be 1 fish affected. That doesn't mean to say I've missed costia on the scrape.

The pond gets sun all day and I've read that malachite green gets more toxic when used in this situation. If it's true or not I don't know.

As for identifying I'm 99% sure it's chilo. I looked at some vids on YouTube and it looks like it.
