help please
Hi Guys, I have just uncovered my ponds after the bad weather, they have been heated at 6 degrees; I haven't seen the fish for a couple of weeks when they all looked fine. I have spotted a 6ins or so koi that looks very fat as if it is bloated, looking at it in the pond, it's scales do not look raised and it hasn't been fed since November.
Any advice welcome! I am going to fully remove the covers and protective nets and try to catch it and hopefully post a photo later.
Thanks in advance Rob

OK, I have caught him and brought him in. His scales are raised so it
looks like dropsy! I have added salt to the water to 1/2% and was going to up it to 1% tomorrow if he is still with us. I can not see any fin or scale damage.
Any recommendations on salt strength or other treatments? I know his prognosis is not good! Right I will go and check my other fish and the water parameters.
Cheers Rob

The salt will bring the fluid out of the koi's body and give his body time to recover.
Hopefully if the koi recovers then after a couple of month then slowly reduce the amount of salt5000 Gallon Fibreglassed Pond With 54" x 27" Infinity Window

Thank you for the reply Andy. Do you think the 1/2% salt today and then 1% salt tomorrow is the way to go? I know koi will be fine in 1% salt water for a couple of months.
Cheers Rob

As Andy says everything you are doing needs to be done slowly no big sudden increases.

Thanks for the reply's guys. As yet, the water retention does not appear to have affected it's swim bladder; so hopefully the other organs have not got too much pressure on them, so there might be hope for it yet.
Thanks Rob

Right a quick update on the fish!. It is now 4 days since I caught the fish, he is in 1% salted water at 18 degrees and his swelling seems to be going down. I was thinking about raising his temperature a bit more now with an aquarium heater! what temperature would you guys recommend?
Many thanks, Rob

agree with john you must be doing it right. for the improvement . the reason for 22c and above. its own immune system is better. so better for the fish to heal its self.
also 2 degrees a day is what i do my tank at. i dropped now 2 degrees a day. for trans-fare s. later on in April. to main pond with my grow on s and a couple that had hypothermia
all the best with the fish

Hi Guys, well my koi's swelling continues to go down. So in the next few days, I was thinking of offering him some food, just two or three pellets a day and see how he goes. Which brings me onto my next question lol. I know I will have to do regular water changes on him with feeding him as he is just in a tub with an air stone. However I have got a tank with an active external Bio-filter, with a couple of fish in it. So what percentage salt water do I have to get down to before it will not kill of the bacteria in the filter?
Many thanks Rob

Well my koi looked back to normal yesterday, all the swelling seamed to have gone down and happily swimming around. I was going to give him another water change today and drop the salt level down. Alas I found him dead! never mind, we tried. Anyway, thanks for the advice,
Rob
