Thread: Jumped Koi

    Jumped Koi

I came home on Saturday evening and found one of my Koi on the grass. Fearing the worst I slowly picked him up and noticed slight movement. So I popped him straight back in the pond and after a few seconds he swam off. To say that I was happy was an understatement.

Now he was covered in grass as I always cut the grass but never pick up the cuttings. All of the grass came off by the next morning apart from one small piece above his eye, it is still there now. So I got him out to find the grass is just above his eye ball but feels like it is under the scales. I couldn't get it out and to stop him getting more stressed I put him back into the pond.

Question: Do I leave it as it is or call out a Koi doctor?

Could you just not sedate the koi and remove it with a pair or tweezers?

I would agree, think some sedation to look closer and a pair of tweezers or wet tissue might be okay to slide it out.

A wet towel over the Kois head and eyes might calm it enough for a quick extraction.

Ok, looks like I will have to get him out again. I won't be able to do sedation as to say that I am new to koi is an understatement. My pond has only been finished for 2 months and the koi have only been in for a matter of 4 weeks.

Talk about a learning curve. I will try over the weekend to sort this out and come back to you.

Thank you for all of your replies.

You can get sedation from most koi dealers. Sometimes it comes in the complete ulcer care kit which may be worth having anyway "just in case" then you can give the area a good clean to reduce any infection risks.

All the directions are on the bottle. It's usually 10mls for 9 litres of pond water. Just need a tub big enough to sedate it in.

In my opinion you should be able to do the procedure without sedation, a wet cloth to hold it and also draped over its head, pull out blade of grass and douse area with a little alcohol to kill any bacteria.

I am sure you are on to this already, but have you checked your water parameters - Koi tend to jump when conditions aren't good - particularly if there is a spike in Nitrite.

Good luck with your koi - I am always scared stiff when I have to handle my koi, and I have been keeping them over 6 years.

Just caught the fish and with him thrashing around in the net, the bit of grass came out. The piece of grass had got bigger but it's out now..

    Happy days.
