need help with finding a cure to bacterial infestions, finrot ulcers , raised scaled , missing scales.
feb 2019 first began 3 months after a new pond build lost 8 koi in 5 days all babies only the youngest affected
treated with FMG mixture by NTLABS 1 course seemed to cure it no more fish died.
for last week ive struggled to keep nitrites below toxic levels due to changing filters (removed superbead 8000- with k1 micro floating bio 100ltrs k1 micro )
fish not wanting to eat , kept on top of it by 40% water change every 2 days , media start bio gone in ,,,
but 2 days ago noticed a change in behaviour - youngest koi floating with fins clamped in barely moving but upright .. was no physical changes till yesterday some showing red streaks of blood through fins and tail and through the body as though its internal bleeding
the fish that survived last time is the worst effected with a nasty ulcer upper body near dorsal fin , his body has fluffy growths and blood streaks all over , I fear this one will die very quickly .
is their another treatment more suited to my problems above ?
thanks

So almost every common ailment known to pondkeepers ......
Filters take ages to mature ... all your problems are most likely directly because of overstocking and over feeding during filter cycling (going by your sparse info) ...
First thing to do is stop feeding and start water changing with properly de-chlorinated water 25% every day ... again don't feed, don't put in any more chemicals, don't put your trust in any "filter start" products or wonder cure garden centre products ... search the forum for "topical ulcer treatment" for ulcers and finrot ... keep water testing every day to see what's happening.
There is no single treatment/product that is suited to your dilemma ... list all your accurate pond and filter specifications, fish stock level and water chemistry parameters and then maybe there's a chance of practical help.
I'm just one of the great unwashed here so I'll let the higher ranked members take over from here before the thread goes off topic ... good luck! ...

Hiya Mark,
Since your main current issues are nitrite and bacterial problems (which could well be secondary but still need addressing) in your shoes I would salt the pond. It will make the nitrite immediately less toxic, and will greatly aid the affected fish. I would go to 0.3% on day 1 and then gradually increase over next couple of days to 0.6%.
Because your filters are still very young and immature using additional antibacterial products such as Chloramine T would hit your filters quite badly. If you end up in a nothing to lose situation then you could still consider it though, alongside the salt.
We are getting warm temps currently so healing should be aided by that, but water oxygen will suffer and this will have the double whammy of affecting the ability of the blood of your fish to carry oxygen where nitrite is affecting them, in addition to a lower capacity of warm water to hold oxygen. Salt will help with this.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

referring to traces comment above,
I have 28 fish in 3000 gallons
5 of are 16-20 inches
3 of are 8 inches
and the rest are 4 - 6 inches
filters are evolution aqua stainless steel settlement drum with modified answer 410 and a larger drum with approx. 100 litres of k1 micro , the whole system was brought second hand and hasn't been used in over 4 years stood dry .
bio air pump is EA airtech 95
had done a 20% water change last night and chucked in the bio a hand full of EA bio balls
water parameters are as follows this afternoon
ammonia 0 nitrite 0.5 PH 7.5 , KH 6 GH 18
water temp currently 16c
pond is highly oxygenated via said air pump and a large water blade as only means of returning water back to pond
will be doing a 30% change this afternoon as this is the max my gravity system will allow
fish did look rather poorly last night which was a shock because it come on so suddenly
today the effected fish are looking surprizing so much healthier , blood streaks have gone, fins now look normal and they are swimming as they were prior .
ive very reluctant to use salt , is their anything else I can do.
thanks

Salt is the thing least likely to knock your filters back hard for bacterial issues.
Is there any particular reason you're not keen to use salt?2016 new 6000 gallon pond

is this the best salt to use feline?
Salt PDV - Water Treatments - Absolute Koi
I am prepared to try something different, getting fed up with nitrite levels which seems to be the reason behind my fish getting sick /makes infections more likely .
reading up on micro k1 most owners say k1 is the slowest media to mature taking over 6 months some said a few years , though that sounded extremely unlikely to me.
3000 ounce = 85kg in salt for a 3000 gallon pond, is that correct?
thanks

Whilst what you. say about. them being fresh water fish is true, when there are issues it can be a godsend. In Japan salt is heavily used when fish are harvested and brought indoors, and certainly in the right circumstances Mark at Cuttlebrook has advised me to use it. If you were using it all year round then I too would have an issue.
When and How To Use Salt - Cuttlebrook Koi Farm
For 0.3% you need 3kg salt per 1000 litres of pond.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Thanks, its so quiet virtually no splashing from approx. 20 inches drop , ive not polished it yet, so will look the part when shiny lol
I only had a tig welder , 500mm x 500mm flat sheets , angle grinder and Irwin quick clamps to make this , shaping it by hand was the hardest part as I had no sheet metal roller .

god knows how I got that figure mixed up. thanks for the link.
I will order a couple bags of 25kg salt and a cheap salt meter .
I think your 100% correct. their is more than one issue going on which requires more than 1 treatment which will set me to beginning with my filters , im thinking to use it until all signs of illness are well passed and filter bio media is becoming mature will check the link to confirm first.
im thinking of adding a small bead filter to add variation , ideally a shower would be great, but haven't got the space for it.

may finish it in a brushed polished finish ,,, mirror finish will show up water stains .
you can weld one up with mig welder, change wire for 316 stainless steel on very low amps , excess weld will be ground off .
fairly easy to make really.
if you do, make sure to have backing /purge gas inside to keep a clean weld.
