ha.. ha...he has just left... spent 2 hrs here.. lovely man.... with wealth of knowledge...
really nice to speak to him... and he was very reassuring... and let me know how i could improve setup etc..
so bit of feedback... he caught the fish with his hands as i had no net.. and he cupped the sick fish and wiped like a purple sludge off him.. and checked his gills... and said right away.. its bacterial......
The main problem he confirmed is buying from garden centres and from salted setups into virgin water.. He said if buying fish to buy from reputable koi dealers and even other koi club members.. so you know what environment you are buying from.. so lesson learned there...
as for these fish he said to salt dip them may help.. so that's my next step..but he did confirm that first 2 years of a pond you will have casualties.(kamikazi fish) . and anything that survives will be bombproof... which made me laugh...
He said i may have problems further down line (treatments etc) with 3 species as in goldfish. koi. sterlet.. so may have to make a decision there...
So purchasing some bits this weekend to try and dip these fish and fingers crossed.
Joining the koi club and looking forward to the next few steps...

Ryan,
So very glad that the koi club man was able to help you out with your fish, pond and going forward - and that he doesn’t remain incarcerated in your cellar!
Does this mean that you won’t be adding the second dose of Blagdon Anti-Ulcer to your pond? I ask because ever since you posted that Maidenhead Aquatics advised you to use this treatment (blind - arghh!!), I’ve wondered whether it’s safe to use with a sterlet in your pond. Disclaimer - I’ve never kept sturgeon/sterlet (only koi), I’ve never used Blagdon Anti-Ulcer and can’t find a definitive list of its ingredients via google. Blagdon claim that it’s safe for all ‘pond fish’. That said, I understand that it’s quite a potent treatment and, according to one website and posts on other forums, contains formaldehyde for which there is (arguably?) no ‘safe level’ for sturgeon/sterlet.
Hope all goes well for you and your fish going forward.Last edited by LouiseR; 12-07-2019 at 08:27 PM. Reason: sp

Hi louise..
I was advised by the Koi Club Man to stop the treatment as I should only have added medication once a diagnosis had been made as which in my case it had not..(i should have listened to everyone on here first) therefore i could be doing more harm than good.
I was informed that this treatment was safe for koi but this was from maidenhead... so i will take this with a pinch of salt... ha.. ha.. no pun Intended... (see previous posts and u may get that one)
so going forward i am going to salt dip fish individually as suggested and keep my fingers crossed.. im stopping treatment... holding back on the feed.. and keeping up with waterchanges as usual.. meeting up with him on weekend again.. too see his pond...and hopefully have some good news with the fish...

hiya john... yeah feeling a lot better.. was blaming myself a bit... but he tested my water and it was good.. so he put it down to the change in environment from salted to non also the fact the fish are small he said sometimes in actual fact its better to start with slightly bigger older fish as they immune systems are sometimes better at adapting to change.these fish were tiny... combined with the fact my pond is 2 months old... he said its really hard in first 2 years and not to beat myself up... everyone experiences these losses... so onwards and upwards... regarding dosage i believe he said half a gramme to a gallon.. but not 100% as im meeting him again this weekend... need to purchase some bits prior to doing this.. net... bucket etc...
thanks ryan

Glad you got on ok Ryan, surprised he didn't to a scrape though but everyone's different in how
they go about things at least you have made contact ; now you've just got to pluck up
the courage to go to your first koi club meeting., you will be fine and just remember they all probably
started off with the '' goldfish pond '' the same as most of us . Take a pen and pad when you see Him
again so that you can jot things down for future reference.

Nice one mate. Good to hear your feeling a wee bit better mate.
Sounds good. From the chap who visited you.
Like Anne said take everything in. And write stuff down mate.
You will learn loads of these people lol. And when funds allow get yourself a qt. Grow on mate. That way you can put fish in
When ill. And also fish that are vulnerable to certain treatments. Like sturgeon orfs tench and the like.
I like the way the bloke caught the fish with his hands lol
Should help the fish with a salt dip lol
Have a good un

Hi all.. well did not get a diagnosis but the fella from celtic koi said it was definately bacterial.. and to be fair he was pretty ill at that point.. but i tried salt dips a couple of times but i think he had gone too far..
He put it down to maidenhead and their setup... he said he would never buy from there..
i bought from radyr and wenvoe tom....
and u are right the young fella there is great and seems very knowledgeable.. but my problems occured after purchasing from radyr who i know salt their ponds at 0.3%.
im not sure if wenvoe do the same but would assume so...
but all fish are fine with the exception of the tiddler..so im not sure 100% of the problem.. but i will probably take the advice off many people and only purchase from a reputable source...
thanka
