Infection
Hi
I am new here but am looking for some help
I have had what i think is a bacterial infection for a couple of years and cannot seem to get rind of it
I am losing fish on a periodic basis, generally these have an open wound where it looks like the flesh has been eaten away
A chap from my local koi shop has been really helpful and checked water values, i am not sure what they were but they were ok, we have scrapped some fish we have found some tricodina and a few others over the last couple of years but they have been treated.
However we still keep getting incidents of dead fish with the same ish wounds, i have added a couple of pictures
The pond is circa 3,000 gallons, is outside with an electric fence around it so I don’t think i am getting any issues from herons or cats etc although i did before the fence was installed, the filter is a multi-bay filter with a 55w UV, I clean the filter with pond water only and generally keep the pond clear of leaves etc, the pond is topped up once a week after cleaning the filter, i expect this relapses 5-10% of the water, i use chlorogo after topping up to treat any chlorine
We have tried everything that my local shop has to offer, i have even had some fish injected, but no matter what we do nothing is making an improvement. The next suggestion is to empty the pond bleach clean the entire system. We would need to remove fish that are showing signs of damage and hope that the rest are not carrying the infection, once cleaned put them back and start again
Really stuck here and would welcome some opinions on what i could try next
Any help much appreciated
Many thanks
Glenn

Do you not have stuff for testing the water yourself?
PH, kh, ammonia, etc.
Readings can swing rapidly over the course of a day.
Getting the water stable is always first thing.
What has been added to the pond to treat for bacteria?

Thanks for your reply
I dont have a water test kit but i have has been tested over time, many times over the couple of years that i have this problem, not sure how many times but frequently and it has always been ok with no issues
We have tried all sorts of treatments, alporex, salt, etc i cant recall them all, some of the fish have been injected as well, is there a specific treatment for bacterial infections, assuming thats what it is

Think you need to contact Dr Paula Reynolds of '' Lincolnshire Fish Health ''
Tel 01205723413....10AM to 5PM...……..Except Mondays As soon as possible those poor fish.
Give her as much information as you can, size of pond, filter set up etc, water test results and send her
those photo's, ''a picture paints a thousand words''. I am no expert but it's obvious you need a bit of professional help.
Good luck and please ring her .

Hi
I have been able to have a really good chat with Dr Paula Rynolds today and i have to say she was so helpful, really spent time with me to talk through what the issues were as well as then providing advice on what to do
So the plan is to treat the water with an anti bacterial Soloutions to reduce the bacterial levels in the pond and at the same time treat any open wounds with iodine to try to stop the infection spreading
We don’t think we will be able to save the bloated fish but we are hopeful to stop the infection spreading further.
If we see further outbreaks then we will swap the wound and send them for analysis to establish what antibiotics to use, but we are hopeful to not need to do this
I have to say that Dr Reynolds was excellent and i am very grateful for the recommendation, many thanks

So what treatments are you adding to the pond. To combat the bacterial
Infections.
Asking so we can all learn of it.
If we see something like your problems.
Good luck with it mate. I know how heart breaking it is when your fish are hurting. Or you lose them.

Sorry i was replying from my phone while out, i am using Chloramine T to reduce the levels of bacteria in the pond and will inspect each fish and clean any open wounds with iodine to try to stop the infection. The Iodine clean will be done several times to try to keep on top of the infection, will let you know how i get on

I was thinking of a test kit and a microscope didnt have time to get one for this issue but will certainly look in to it, what sort of scope do i need? Any thing special?
Same question for the testing kit, any links?
For the iodine i order it on amazon
I have cleaned the pond thoroughly this weekend, hovered the pond and done a water change and have now added the chloramine T first dose, I have checked each fish and treated with iodine as well where there is anything that looked read or was open
Fingers crossed

"Apex Practitioner" is entry level decent scope with moving slide stage (needed for searching all over the slides at high magnification) ... look out for second hand and Amazon Warehouse damaged box deals (that's where I got mine for about half price) and there was nothing wrong with it ...
"API Freshwater Master Test Kit" ... is a good test kit to start with ... shop around usually about £25 - £30 ... Don't buy second hand and always ask the seller what the expiry date is if buying new (some false bargains will be about to go out of date) ...
Test kit and scope is one of the best value investments you can make in the hobby ...
