Treating costia when fmg hasn’t worked
Going off of the title I’m looking for solutions to costia. I’ve gone with mg&f with three doses five days apart (apparently hasn’t worked), yesterday I did a thorough clean out of my nexus and rodded by bd pipework etc to ensure no crud is sat anywhere & there was a little bit of settlement in the bd pipework, but this is now cleared and there isn’t really anywhere else anything could be gathering up so I’m happy there.
I’m not heated so can’t heat ramp the pond, I know there are various other treatments but non are apparently as effective as mg&f (going off of what’s in Duncan griffiths book!), but Is there anything else worth trying??
I’m considering PP,Alperex,CT, and there is some stuff that Duncan does too (icc if I remember correctly), can’t keep spending endless amounts trying to treat this so need something with a high probability of success!
Water Parameters are good, and water temp will be water the current weather allows (so approx 13-15 deg c I reckon)
With all this in mind, what would your next port of call so to speak!?
FYI - I’ve got some CT on hand, PP is cheap enough I guess, but after that costs start to ramp up don’t they and with unknown chances of success!
Cheers in advance
Matt

hi matt hope your well. I have just looked in duncans book and your treatment was correct and the stronger one, then on the table chart it is PP. then CT
the only thing to ask is did you take the mucus of the fish first. I might be wrong but the mucus might be protecting them. maybe chloromine T first , then treat. I have just done this myself with skin flukes. and it has worked
just my view on this. hope you beat it mate

using something to strip the mucus layer, sounds like a plan, would make sense too as one of the fish I scraped there was quite a thick layer of mucus came off on the scrape!
Thought I’d ask as Duncan’s book is very good, but obviously it doesn’t cover some of the more recent treatments you can get (alperex for one), just don’t want to get stuck shelling out £££’s trying this n that and also might some treatments not play nice with others!??
Wouldn’t the mg&f have stripped the mucus layer though, or isn’t it really aggressive enough for that!??

Your right on duncs book. Needs updating. With the modern meds.
Still a good book though.
All i have heard on stripping mucus is pp and ct.
What i have heard is pp is less aggressive. So people use the ct.
Plus i believe it gases off in a 24 hour period.

How bad is the infestation? Is it on all fish?
The excess mucus could be the Costia or the meds , FGM can cause fish to over produce mucus.
Had a friend locally that had a similar stubborn problem and ICC gave him a result.
PP is an option.
Be very careful with Alparex, you can get severe contra reactions...
I don't believe that PP does strip the mucus from a Koi! Indeed as with MGF you are likely to get more mucus on the fish.

As Dave says, your other option is Duncan's ICC, with or without salt. Product Page
I tried it a couple of years back and was very effective.
Make sure your pond KH is well above 4 for any treatments that could possibly be acidic (such as Alparex or any other similar mixtures).2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Treating costia when fmg hasn’t worked
I’ve got some ct and mg&f so I’ll try a hit with CT and then mg&f again to see if that’ll shift it, if not I’ll give the icc a shot.
Dave, I know alperex doesn’t always play nice with other chemicals, seem to recall it being a definite no no if you’ve recently used anything prazi based so I’ll heed your warning and give it a wide berth this time around. Having said that I have used it successfully in the past with no apparent side effects, but that’s been in isolation and not when there’s been near the use of anything else!
Thanks everyone for your input!

17-05-2019, 12:39 AM #11I’ve gone with mg&f with three doses five days apart .. Does this mean you did 3 single doses 5 days apart ? The reason I ask is because I use the Microbe-lift bsdt and it clearly states that ya do 3 doses in 3 consecutive days while doing a 20% water change before each dose...

Haven’t actually re-scraped any fish yet to see if this issue is actually solved finally, but just going off of the fishes behaviour alone it looks like it could have worked as I’m no longer seeing them clamped up sat on bottom or flashing either!
