    KH Buffer

Is there any difference between the KH- Buffer Up that you buy from say NTlabs or Clearwater and ordinary sodium bicarbonate?

i donot think there is but they imply it. wether there is any thing else in it or not i dont know.
so i think the answer is

if you feed a good food which has a formula which sustains fish life well.
then adding sodium bicarbonate is a perfectly good practice to maintain the KH which inturn keeps a stable PH which inturn keeps the filter bateria working at their maximum to keep the water in good condition, which inturn keeps the fish in top condition.
be careful how much you put in at any one time and check the kh. if you keep the kh at about 6 you should never have any troubles with ph crash.
I always measure the food i give to the fish and measure the bicrb i add once you have had some practice of how much its easy to duplicate your actions.

Would think the only real difference is s/bicard is a lot cheaper and most use it.
Dosage, 30 gm per 1000 ltrs per day
No more than 100 gm per 1000 gals per day.

If you taste it you will realise it is actually bicarb

i dont think that in practice you can give daily dosages, at least for just general use, different if your just trying to boost up your k.h a bit.
My ponds need for bicarb fluctuates due to various factors, but its never been much more than a mug full once a week on 25,000 litres, yet Adam just 2 miles up the road was using loads more.

David is absolutely right there. It needs dosing 'to effect' not adding at any fixed rate.
Test the KH, add some and test again until you reach your targets level. Test often, particularly when feeding heavily because this is when it will drop the fastest as filter bacteria use it.
