Grass carp fungal infection?
I lost my grass carp earlier this year to what I think was fin/tail rot. I decided to buy two babies and they’ve been doing great in the pond, one has been hanging round the top by itself for a few days and today on better inspection noticed it looks like it’s got some sort of fun rot/ fungal infection. I netted it and put it in a tank by itself, it’s like it’s fins are fluffy and they have green what I think is algae on them? I’ve treated it with pimafix. It’s swimming round the tank. Will get some pics tomorrow but does anyone know what this could be and how to help it? Thanks (everyone else in the pond is fine)

Hi there. When i had fin rot. I put the fish to sleep. And used pp watered down. Cleaned areas off. Then used a cotton bud on the fins with a weak pp in a egg cup. Making sure that the pp did nt run onto the scales. Or surrouning area of the fish.worked on mine. Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk

Just out of interest are your grass carp the green or albino ones?
I've tried keeping the albino ones in the past and had no luck at all as the slightest change for the worse in water quality and they were the first to die off. I lost all 6 small ones in about a week. This was a few years ago now and I tried again with another 3 or 4 a year or so later and had the same results so I put it down to them being more susceptible to illnesses as they were albinos rather than green ones? Not sure if it makes any difference but just a thought.

They do but you probably need to be more careful with them and keep on top of your water quality and be very careful what treatments you use. The ones I had were all very small probably about only about 3" to 4" long so sticking them in the main pond wasn't the best idea but at the time I didn't know any better unfortunately.
The albino ones look very nice I agree.

Kusuri POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE
You can get it on ebay.
Or NTLabs do it as well.
Put say 1/4 of a teaspoon full in a coffee cup fill coffee cup and then cotton dip. And put it on the fins. At damaged points. Some of mine i had to trim with scissors. Then used PP to cautasau the wound.
Hope this helps.

I think it is possible as one of my fish had a pectoral fin with a tear in it and a guy called Lee Burrows came round to do a pond health check and just sniped the exposed bone and cleaned it with something - may have been iodine? and jobs a good un. I can't even see the fin was repaired now. It all comes down to how confident you are handling the fish really and then knowing what to do with them.

I suppose it could. But you would have to have it on a wet towel. And it will be jumpy.
The reason if you put it on in water the pp. It will just run off it. And be to much diluted.
While knocked out. Or put to sleep. It can be left a couple of minutes to work. When applied.

Fungal infections are almost always secondary to another issue. You can best treat the fungus with malachite green either topically or in their water(with UV off). PP is a cauterising agent for bacterial fin rot, not appropriate to use where there is a fungus.
However you also need to do full water tests including for chlorine, and take mucus scrapes from a few fish for parasites.
It is not ‘normal’ to bave a bunch of fish of.a certain kind die off- there is a reason and really you need to identify it.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

I’m guessing it’s somehow got injured and got fin rot/fungus from that, he’s in a tank by myself inside now. I’m currently treating with pimafix but I have malachite green. Should I treat together or stop using the pimafix? Last time I checked the water everything was fine but I can check again tomorrow. I’ve heard malachite green is really bad as it kills off all the good bacteria in the filter? I used it in my tank once and was told not to use it again for that reason. All my other fish in the pond are in good health but should I treat them too?

I agree on scrapes and water tests.
As it has come from some where.
But also agree that sometimes you have to act fast. On the fish to save it. Thats why i pp mine right away.
And there all alive and fins repaired.
There is a milder fmg out now called eradick fmg. I have used it because i have orfs and tench in my pond. I aint got a clue if it killed my filters. There well mature now anyway. And recover quite quickly after a treatment. I had a few issues with new pond syndrome. To many fish at once. Ripped holding tank.
Another story.
Thats why i had issues. This year everything has been great. No issues. Took 2 1/2 years to get to this stage. Fingers crossed. But through it . I learned a hell of a lot. And got confident with treating the fish.
If you think the fish is on its last legs or fins so to speak. Get it done as quick as possible. I think that is half the problem with losing fish. People wait to long to act.
Just my opinion.

Thanks, this is my first year with a pond, had tanks for years but I didn’t realise how much much easier tanks were! Found the fish dead today, I didn’t hold out much hope that it would survive anyway. I’m always gutted to lose any fish though. Is that a book? I will check it out. Thanks

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
