Treating for parasites as a precaution?
I visited T C Koi this weekend, very cool place however the guy was pushing me hard to buy a bottle of Formalachite parasite treatment as he says that tap water contains eggs and those eggs hatch, causing problems, at this time of year when the temp increases. Is this the case?
If so, what annual chemical treatments do I need to be doing to maintain a healthy pond and at what times of the year? I am change about 20% water per week currently.
Cheers

After a comment like that I would take everything else this “dealer” says with a pinch of salt.
Also buying the malachite and formalin separate is my preference so you can check crystals haven’t formed in the formalin.

I'm not sure exactly what eggs but he refereed to them existing in the areas water system and only hatching in warm conditions. Another guy there agreed with him and said this particular parasite treatment must be executed once per year minimum, however it could have been a well oiled sales pitch as he later said "don't say I didn't warn you" as I left without purchasing it.
Do I need to do an annual treatment for parasites or any other bacterial problems as a preventative measure?

Treating for parasites as a precaution?
I personally think it is an outdated and to some extent ‘lazy’ thing to do - ‘Oh yeah, in the Spring whack in some FMG as it never did any harm...’
Essentially all this is doing is increasing the resistance to the chemical which ultimately will lead to it being totally ineffective - I’m pretty sure that is what, or has happened with the Fluke chemicals.
Observing your fish when you feed them, bowling any that give cause for concern, scraping and properly identifying anything under a microscope is really the only advice I’d give in this space.
If you haven’t got a microscope or a nervous about doing any of that; get Lee or Des round to do a Fish Health Check for you.
All Dealers need cash flow, what a way to increase it...

Ridiculous statement. I would suggest avoiding dealers with such an uninformed attitude but, if you should be forced to go there again, ask him this question "isn't chlorine/chloramine supposed to sanitise water?"
Tell him you will be pleased to forward his answer to Essex and Suffolk Water (his local supplier) so that they can contact him for his advice on how to bring the water they supply up to a safe standard and fit for humans to drink.

The Daily pond temp thread
Just kept 12 overnight for the first time. Hitting 12.8 in the daytime but bang on 12 first thing...
