Not saying this is your problem but i wouldnt trust the 3 stage water purifier you need to add some Sodium Thiosulphate and check with Dpd4 tablets as per Mankys site.

Think you need Manky in on this as he is the water expert,i would pm him mate and get him to reply on here so we can all read it.

Well i have done another 50% water change !!
Nexus biological side emptied and nothing really to report in the bottom.
PH readings are now down to 8.82 no food going in pond, Zeolite added to soak up any Ammonia.
When purging bottom drain through sieve very fast flow, also have 4" valve to waste from bottom drain,
I can empty around 750 gallons in 3 to 4 mins so no blockage there or anything nasty living there !

It looks to me like its working with the water changing its come down now from the 9 + ph

So now your getting to safe levels.
Keep an eye on it to see if it goes up now.
Especially a big jump. Mine is permantly ph 8.0 if it jumps to say 8.5 which is rare. I clean my top pond out. And check my nexus.

Good to hear you have a good flow on all your drains ray. Thats another thing knocked of the reasons for the jump.
It now only leaves your pond. For debris. Trickle in and out now. Using St. And maybe it will stable out. Or keep doing small water

    changes.
What was your stable ph before the big spike mate.

Thank you for your comments,PH has been stable for a long time, i`m going to hoover the pond this morning and continue with smaller water change and keep a keen eye on the PH, only thing i can think of is the new estate being built along the road its still in its infancy and the water board will have been configuring pipes there i wonder if this may have affected my PH levels from my constant trickle in the past week or two ?

Jubbly, I've been asked to poke my nose into this thread but to give an informed answer I need a little more information.

Can you confirm that the pH of the water entering the pond is still 8.1 after it has been aerated for several hours?

Do you have any sources of alkalinity exposed to the water such as untreated cement/concrete or limestone rocks?

    Hi,

The PH of the water entering the pond via the 3 stage purifier is coming out at 8.1, The pond is aerated via air lift, air stone in pond also nexus k1 ,there is no concrete / cement in the vicinity, the pond is made up of sleeper formed/box liner bottom drain to sieve then pumped to nexus then airlifted to return, i have to be very honest and don`t keep a close eye on my readings as i let the fish tell me if there is a problem, the present pond has been running for approximately one year now although i have been keeping water for 12 years, i hope this provides enough information.

    No, not necessarily.

Biological action in a koi pond tends to deplete the KH which creates a downward influence on the pH so the pH value of the water in your pond should never exceed the pH of the source water (once it's been properly dechlorinated and aerated). If the pH goes higher than the source water then something must have been added or leached into the water so the question to answer is what have you done to bugger up the pH?

Long shot here as you probably have already answered for yourself if not on here, have you had any spawning?

I had some on Sunday night and it's buggered my parameters totally.

    Worth a try?

Well it`s back up to PH9.0, i know it fluctuates different times of the day.
Really frustrating going get a chlorine test done and see where that takes me.

What is needed to pin down the cause is more data.

Begin by trying another test kit to make sure the first one is reading correctly.

If that reads the same then take a bucketful of water direct from the purifier and stand it near the pond so that, each time you check the pond pH, you can compare it with the pH in the bucket.

Wait a few days for any change in the bucket pH to take place then do your weekly water change then measure the pH and KH of the pond and the bucket and record the values.

Continue to feed as normal but don't add anything else to the pond.

Measure the pH and KH values daily at the same time of day and record the values until the pond pH has risen above the first value.

That may seem like a lot of buggering around but it will give some basic information and an indication of how the pond pH is varying with time compared to the water in the bucket.

    Hi Manky

I have ordered a new test kit and a new KH/GH test kit, I have replaced the UV bulb today. The pH reading this morning before work was pH 8.99 and this afternoon
    pH of 9.4.
I will document your process and see where we go from here.
If I were to take my pond water for a second opinion, would the water loose some of its characteristics/parameters ?

I should have asked this before - do you use a pH pen type meter to check your pH, if so do you know if it's properly calibrated?

Yes I use a pen pH meter and it was only calibrated last week.
