THANKYOU for the very helpful tips about pruning Wisteria. I ll show Paul when he comes back, as we had only one very tiny flower on ours this year. x

The tea-house was looking a bit stark without the wisteria and the dahlias in the troughs in front of it. I was wondering what we could do about it and then yesterday I spotted these on a stand outside Sainsbury's, Hebes at £2, but also "three for two." So I bought six.

They look quite good there, (they have lots of purple flowers earlier in the year), will be less time consuming looking after than the dahlias,(which attract slugs and snails), which I've cut back, left in their six pots and put behind the tea-house, I'll decide what to do with them next year.

The hebes should be like these two, we bought last year either side of the two lavender plants, in twelve months time.

I would have never pruned the wisteria that far back. Your pictures just illustrate it perfect for me so hopefully next year I will have a few flowers
The hebes will be lovely there infont of your tea house . Pity you are so far away from me would love to have seen your garden. Today I am pruning my hedge, well more than pruning I have reduced it by half. We let it get to high and to wide so it will take some years to look good again. Notice I said I am pruning. Husband has a golf outing again so if left for me to do

You've certainly got a nice aspect from your garden.

Nothing wrong with playing golf! It's the only time my wife says she has for housework, when I leave at 8.30am and am not home until 2.30pm. so not under her feet all day!

I usually play golf three times a week, but I've been struggling with "golfer's elbow" (it's the other side to "tennis elbow"), so I've only been playing once or maybe twice a week for the last month. But I'm due for a cortisone injection on Tuesday, so hopefully it'll be better in time for the club competition final in a couple of week's time.

I used to play a lot of squash when I was younger and had tennis elbow once and an injection cured it, so I'm quite hopeful.

    Back to wisterias.

To give you an idea how hard I prune these back, this is the one on the pergola next to the pool, just as the buds are starting to show.

And this it today. Plenty of foliage. They are supposed to be two rows of foliage with a gap in the middle. I make them like that to cut down on the amount of leaves.

This is the one on the pergola at the back of the house earlier in the year. It was pruned back just as hard.

I can't get into golf myself but my husband just loves the game. Suppose its good that he has a hobby and once he retires he won't be under my feet all day.
The wisteria is lovely and it would be so nice to walk under the flowers.
We managed the purchase the fields in front of our house so I no longer need a high hedge for privacy. Maybe I should have kept it to prevent the stray golf ball coming my way when he practices :roll eyes:
I was showing my husband your tea -house, he is in the construction Ind, and really likes seeing something unusual. He really liked it.

If we owned a field at the bottom of our garden, my wife would insist on me buying her a couple of these and to be fair I would!

We have these in the field next to ours - very sweet - and even better, I don't have to go round picking up after them

Further to my point about hard pruning of wisteria.

Compare this photo taken today, with so much foliage, with the one showing the almost bald appearance of this wisteria in April.
