    Hey Rs dont put them down as they can change so much.

    I bought 25 five ins a few years ago and as they grew I thought they looked shit.
    But as they grew more they changed so much they turned out really beautifull koi.
    Not saying they all go like that but I believe in giving them a chance.

    Good luck with them mate.
    John

    Ha ha.... Had to wait over half hour for a gap between them for the photo so you could actually see in the water.

    Did take one great shot of them, then noticed my ugly mug was in full view on the reflection so quickly deleted that one.

    Thanks John.

    Mine normally look good when I buy them, then look shit after a few Months, and stay shit.

    Got a couple that have bucked the trend, especially the 8cm £16 pond filler Kohaku that I've really taken to this year.

    I keep reading that the grey ones should be culled, but I think this grey one has turned out nice and has potential to be a nice Tancho Showa if the sumi falls ok and doesn't fully cover the beni.

    The only way the small one will look good is if I'm very lucky with the sumi placement.

    The white one and "brown" one I think are mutts. Brown one might be a shiro with a small blotch of beni on one side.... still a mutt mind.
    there looking great mate , the words you describe them with baffle me but looking so much healthier

    Ha ha, guessing you mean these words:

    In English:

    I've read that baby koi which are completely grey in colour are inferior and shouldn't be kept but my grey one has turned out nice and could be a Tancho Showa if the black (sumi) develops well and doesn't cover up the red (beni) on the head.

    (A Tancho Showa is a white Koi with black markings and a single red spot on the head).

    The colours on a red, white and black Koi are referred to as:
    White = Shiroji
    Red = Beni
    Black = Sumi

    So to make it easier why don t we just say white red and black. Instead of adding foreign lingo. After all most of us are born and bred in the uk lol. And speak our language. Not Japanese. Not having a dig here lol. Just can t get my head around it.
    Makes things far more simpler for a newbie
    And a thick git like me.
    Well explained by the way mate

    Think we all start by saying the colours in English.

    Then you go to the dealer and say, "The red and black on that one look nice and strong"

    And they look at you confused with one eyebrow raised, and say, "what do you mean"

    Then you reply, "the red and black on that Koi over there, looks really nice to my eyes"

    Then they go, "Ahh, I get what your trying to say now, you mean the Beni and the Sumi"

    In the end I gave up and just started talking their lingo.

    A few Months later you pop into the garden centre to their main "big pond".

    That's the pond with Israeli Koi, priced up like this:

    Up to 12" £200
    12" to 14" £400
    14" to 16" £695
    16" to 20" £1200

    The assistant comes over and asks if you're interested in buying.

    You say, "The Beni and Sumi isn't very strong on these"

    They look at you confused with one eyebrow raised, and say, "what do you mean, they've all been quarantined?"

    You give up and just say, "They're lovely aren't they and the water looks crystal clear with that box filter. Anyway, how much is that FMG over there?"

    Fed the "fry" medium pellets today just to see if they could take them.

    Not only could they take them but one managed to get 3 in his gob!

    Also been feeding more chopped mussels lately, they can't get enough.

    No photos at the moment 'cos yesterday's rain has made the water murky. Only cleaned the pond out on Thursday and it was crystal clear up until the rain.
