This is my excuse.
The reason my pond construction stalled a bit recently is because I have been busy making one of these.
Being a chippy, it was obvious to me that I should make my Mums coffin, so she was the first. The second was for a very good friend, and this one for my X father in law who is being cremated tomorrow.
They have not all been made the same design/look, all three have been completely different so no existing plans or measurements to work to.
But it’s strange to be taking so much care over creating something knowing it will only be here for a few days. From the planning stage, making sure no metal is used, due to the incineration process, the sourcing and buying of expensive materials (mostly oak), heat steam bending parts of it, three different layers of lining material, one for fluid retention, then a wadding and the final satin layer being pleated (thanks to the wife). Sanding off of all the wood to a fine finish, staining, and waxing.
Just so much work, a good weeks labour in fact, and all with no pre notice, and so little time to complete.
You cannot say I’m busy this week, I’ll make it next week, the customer cannot be expected to wait that long really.
And the worst part is, in the back of your mind, all the time you know it is a single use product. Nothing like that cabinet or shop front or conservatory you just made, this project will be gone in a flash, literally.
But even so, making a box like this for someone close to you, is very rewarding, the families concerned are so appreciative of the quality and effort.
This is not an advert by the way, If I actually charged for them they would be too expensive. Couldn’t compete with those imported and mass produced boxes on the market.

Very nice work Steve. I am not a chippy but can spot quality work when I see it being in the construction industry like your self.
Sorry for you loss too.
Has anyone got Fred's measurements for when he sees that I have got water in my QT setup as of this morning?

The name of the deceased is Leadbeater, so we have used plumbers sheet lead beating tools (called hardwood leadbeaters) as the handles.
The last coffin for the friend who was a petrol head was themed such, so we stripped a 6 block engine and used the 6 pistons as handles. The problem with that was we had to make special arrangements to go behind the scenes of the crematorium to remove them after the ceremony before the coffin could be incinerated.
