    Earth wool

We had our roof relaid 14mths ago and the loftvwas an over all mess due to the old back mortaring the slate..
    Anyway..
Im thinking of putting earth wool in between the roofing joists so far as our roof is hipped....
    Then clad over it.
And then clad an area 8x8 and board over the floor joists.
This would greatly create a storage area..

So is earth wool an feasible option in betwen the joists..

Im assuming earth wool is rockwool?
You would be best using kingspan or an insulated backed plaster board etc... to line it out with ant. You need a breathing gap to allow air to flow still between the tiles and insulation ideally. You could end up with problems if packing a load of rockwool in due to condensation build up and eventually rot in the rafters. I may be wrong bud but thats what i was told by my roofer when i queried about doing it on mine. Same as when boarding out you dont want the rockwool packed in tight as it needs to breath. Actually seen that one in the flesh on a relatives, there was damp patches coming through on the ceiling and when we lifted the boards in the loft the wool was sodden.

According to what i have been reading duebto the age of our property we have roof rafters and newer properties have trusses basically the same thing..

Also we have a new roofing membrane under the slates so i have to measure the rafter depth to the membrane..
It is advisable to us a ridgid insulation and to leave a 50mm air gap between the membrane and the insulation..

    Time to measure up tomoz....

I'd say Lee is right on this one. The roof needs to breathe.

Same as cavity walls need to breathe. Filling them up with insulation invariably causes damp problems further down the line.

If you have loads of earthwool spare and no other use for it, you could keep it to insulate your next pond which we all know your going to build again one day!
