23-year old Rhys Boni has been crowned 2018 SkillELECTRIC champion after excelling in an intensive two-day practical competition at WorldSkills UK LIVE – the nation’s largest skills and careers event with over 80,000 visitors.
Rhys, who trained with the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), took top marks over his fellow finalists in a complicated electrical installation task comprising four circuits with various components and equipment.
The task had to be completed within a strict timeframe and was marked against tough criteria including wiring and connection skills, inspection and testing and measuring and marking out, which had to be accurate within + / – 2mm.
Taking second place and a silver medal was Paul Anderson from McGill & Co Ltd, SECTT and Dundee & Angus College. Third place and a bronze medal went to Michael White of JJ Electrical and York College.
All finalists that took part received a two-channel HD CCTV kit from ESP, a professional safe isolation kit from Di-Log, an ECIR Codebreakers guide from NAPIT and a goody bag including a power bank from Unite the Union. The winning college also received £500 worth of products from Scolmore Group.
SkillELECTRIC is organised by NET, in conjunction with WorldSkills UK, and has the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) as its lead sponsor.
Speaking after his win, Rhys said: “It’s overwhelming being the gold medal winner, it still hasn’t really sunk in yet! I absolutely love what I do and always strive to put 100% into everything I do, so it was a great achievement to top off my apprenticeship. I would like to thank my college tutors George McGill, Brian Kerr and Dale Clancy, the competition organisers and judges who put the time and effort in to make these competitions happen and the sponsors, in particular Martyn Walley from Scolmore and Di-Log for providing the prizes and equipment. The experience was amazing and I would encourage upcoming electrical apprentices to take part in the event if they are given the opportunity.”
Martyn Walley, Group Technical Manager at Scolmore was one of the judges at the event. “Rhys operated consistently right from the outset and throughout the competition,” Martyn said. “He was completely calm, focussed and professional with the task, planning and managing the workload along with the allotted time perfectly to ensure that all items were completed as required – this itself was a bigger challenge than he would normally be exposed to, given the amount of distractions in place with visitors to the competition and other competitors at the show. Rhys is a true credit to his employer, college and industry setting the bar at a level to be proud of.”
Steve Brawley of the ECS added: “It was a real pleasure to spend time with the eight young top-quality electricians who competed this year, they are a credit to the industry, and I was delighted to award Rhys with his gold medal in front of a packed audience at the awards ceremony. WorldSkills UK LIVE is an event you must visit to grasp its scale and ambition; the ECS is very proud to support this and the SkillELECTRIC competition.”

He’s undecided would like to work for himself but he’s not wanting to do house bashing as he calls it . Hes more into industrial and commercial so will have to see D101005D-7634-44B8-A661-AF34D7FF85E0.jpgAA3FEC63-3C12-4C47-831F-A1429DC1616B.jpg

That looks well neat. I like that a lot. Was all of that Rhys' own work or was some of it there and he had to link up with it?

That's kind of what the AM2 test was like just brought up to date a fair bit.

House bashing lol it's not that bad just easier to get started as there is a lot more call for it. Industrial and commercial is where the money is but can be a problem if they don't want to pay up and also take longer to pay up due to their policies.

    Nice one.

At least he would have a contract to get himself going but will need to find other work as it's best not to work for the same company self employed for too long or you may be classed as being employed by them and then have to be on the cards for them I think. Worth looking into the rules on that.

Just to confirm if he is a sole trader that applies but if he is a limited company I don't think it does as basically he is employed by his own company and his company is working for the other company if that makes sense?

Hi firm as far as I can tell the top director at the mill is going to help set him up he seem to be well connected telling the farmers thay buy the corn from about Rhys and using his award as publicly for the mill .
although Rhys has got his own contacts from the old firm he was with I think a lot of them know the firm was on its way out and thay where asking the men to do work off the books and has been phoning around so should be ok. Although I do see where your coming from

And a big well done from me too. Your son will remember this achievement for the rest of his life. I did similar back in 1976 representing my technical collage in the Building Trades exhibition at Earls Court. All the building collages sent their best student to compete in the competition. That year in my section 'carpentry and joinery' the task was to make, by hand tools only, a complete and operational opening casement window fitted within its own frame. The exhibition hall floor was covered with work benches and students just like me. I didn't win, but it was a highlight of my apprenticeship.
Your Son must be chuffed to bits.
    Steve.

Hi Carlo, I saw your son in a copy of Professional Electrician magazine the other week regarding his achievements etc. It was quite a big write up in there. How's things going now?
