Question for Saki Hikari food users
Hello all,
I've just bought some Saki Hikari food for the first time. It's the multi season, I bought it from ebay and it came in a plain plastic container (so can't verify 100% it's genuine - but the seller has good feedback so I assume it is).
Is the brown coating supposed to start dissolving on contacting the water? I can see the oils leaching into the water straight away, and after 3-4 minutes any remaining pellets are much paler, as the coating has gone.
I had been reading koi food comparisons on forums before buying this, and a negative comment on some foods was that they leached a lot of oil and caused more protein foam. There were no mentions of this being a problem with Saki Hikari, so I didn't expect it to be this noticeable?
I did contact the seller, he tested the "batch" that my order came from and said the level of leaching was as he expected.
Am I worrying about nothing?
Cheers,
Nick.

Hi
if it’s the same place I’ve bought from, it’s a reputable dealer, who buys in bulk and mixes Saki Hikari floating and sinking growth etc. I have bought several times from there, and can confirm it’s saki. It smells, looks and gobbled up the same as that bought in sealed sacks. I have however only used for mixed floating and sinking growth where growth sinking is not stocked in many places. If just buying one grade then Price wise not so much benefit than sealed 5kg bags. With a sealed bag u get full control of use by dates plus peace of mind..problem with buying non sealed you have to trust that the best before is correct, and be aware that once opened by the dealer the food starts to lose freshness from day one..

The guy selling it on eBay I believe is buying in bulk and then selling smaller amounts cheap. I actually considered doing this myself some time ago but he beat me to it!
As for your question, yes, mult-season does do exactly as you describe with the oil residue and colour change.
After 3 to 4 minutes the colour fades, then if you grab a pellet you'll notice that it squishes very easily and sinks to the bottom.
I pre-soak food before feeding to my fancy goldfish and when I feed this stuff it makes a right mess in the tank as it breaks up so easily and bits of it come through their gills.

Thanks for all the replies. You've put my mind at ease about this food (and about this seller - aquaticswarehouse).
Can I check if the sinking growth is okay as a winter food? They like multi season so far, but only the bigger fish come up for it.
