Changing from orchard fisheries food
Hi all,
Have used Orchard Fisheries Premium this season and although I have had good growth and the fish seem to like it I have had a lot of foaming (DOCs) - briefly tried some garden centre cheapy food when I ran out and the foaming resolved in a few days and reappeared once I started back with the Orchard.
Not looking to spend mega bucks on food so considering either the NT medikoi or alternatively Queni Japmix - any views on these or other recommendations without breaking the bank? Priorities are koi health/growth with low waste/minimal detriment to water quality.
Cheers,
James.

Hi James,
I have been using q/k food for a number of years now mainly the Jap mix with no problems, but this year i changed to their Ultimate mix with really good growth and even my 18 yr old started growing again .
But it started to brown the water,i can only presume it was the food that caused it so i am going back to the Jap mix next season as i couldnt stand the browning.
I know their food is Coppens but i think it is good quality for the price and q/k service cant be beaten.
Never used the Medikoi James so cant comment on it.
Hope it has helped you a bit.John

I've been using Orchard Farm Fisheries food for a few years now since it was recommended to me by Lee Burrows and never had any water quality issues that I could put down to the food but then again I've never had gin clear water as my filter systems have never been the best as in no drum filter etc. so am not worried about it and as long as I can see to the bottom of my pond and see the gravel down there that's good enough for me. Water parameters are always fairly much spot on apart from early season when filters are picking back up after the winter chill.
Each to their own I suppose.
I've tried various feeds from cheap garden centre stuff to Saki Hikari but just found Orchard fisheries stuff a good all rounder and the fact that my fish go made for it is a bonus as one of my fish is nearly 3/4 of the way out of the water each time I go near the pond. Good job I've got a net over the pond or it would be half way up the garden every time the patio door gets opened LOL

Thanks all for thoughts - maybe I'll buy a small amount of the orchard and queni and see how the fish react to each.

I go to my local tackle shop in caterham and buy sinking pellets , all different sizes for £3.99a kilo. No water dis colour or after effects and feed them quite alot.
I was told it was what the fish farms use and I can understand why the koi go mad for it.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
