I've got a couple of ideas for the way the air lift is going to supplied etc. that may require some of your knowledge Alan if you don't mind.

I'm always happy to give a view.
However I stress I understand much of the 'science' but there are others here with a LOT more practical experience. They will be able to give you much more real world advice.
On that basis I'm happy to discuss.

You can get lost in over thinking air lifts ...
1) Feed it plenty water at the inlet (because it can only lift what it can get).
2) Make it with as long a drive pipe as you can practically manage.
3) Give it as much air as you can ..... that's it ... if you want to go higher you need a longer pipe and more air (finer bubbles help).
If you want to go really high it'll start to pulse rather than flow ... but that may be ok for you. (Alan can give you a full rundown on why that happens).
I'm undecided about Alan's theoretical design purely because of my own past experience of designing filters only on paper and the outcome of that ... but it is a very elegant design and I hope it does surprise me.
Let me see your design Frimley or PM it and I'll tell you what I think from my years of completely trouble free air lifting and you can take what you want from that and use it alongside Alan's more scientific advice...

Thanks Trace much appreciated.
As Alan has helped me rule out one of my designs due to my inferior technical knowledge and so I don't look a total plum I put the 2 designs that should work on here in a little while when I get the laptop on. I'm using the phone to reply at the moment and haven't got access to the designs from it.
At least if it is totally wrong it will give someone a good laugh.

This is the basic version - not to scale obviously - just draw to show the basics of it. Ignore the T No. 2, 3 and 4 I forgot to remove those when I changed the design - the first design had 4 T 's
Attachment 23712
This is another version which should also work.

On the drive pipe there is a stop end on both ends of the top drawing and only one on the bottom of the drive pipe on the bottom drawing.

Im not entirely sure what im supposed to do with the skimmer line in all honesty ive read people saying the skimmer and the main filter need to be on seperate lines so i was going to just have the bottom drain going straight to the nexus then into a pump then uv then return to my pond under the water level, and then my wall skimmer also on its own run back to the pond. Dont know if i need filter first and then pump or pump and then filter for the skimmer its my first pond so bit confused about the skimmer.. Its built into the pond at least lol

Hi lora my set up is nexus with draco drum inside. Then onto uv return to pond.On one line.
Then on second line skimmer to an ultra sieve uv returns to mid level in the bottom of a pond.
All gravity fed with pumps after the filters.
Or you could go this way. As in photo with a balance line.
2 pumps the one at the sieve has to be larger then the pump after the nexus filter
I believe. The balance line pipework is 4 inch.
Hope this helps

hi I have been wondering about how much to feed my fish my temps are on average 10/11 and I feed my 11 fish twice a day about 10 grams and they seem happy most of the food is gone after 10 mins then I put skimmer on and remove what's left ,am I doing anything wrong should I increase the amount ? im looking to get a heater to heat to around 18 ? would this encourage them to eat more and grow ?

Decrease the amount if there’s any left but feed them more often I believe is a good way of doing it.

Hi Alex,
I would think your giving too much at one time if you are removing excess after ten minutes.
I would give them enough that they scoop up in a minute,as above little and often is the way to go.
It takes a while to get used to how much to give, and yes heating will help as the warmer the water the more they eat.John

I feed every hour a small amount of food, starting at 08:00 until 19:00, so that’s 13 small feeds a day, the food lasts no more than 1 minute on the water

I just feed mine 3 times a day but am slowly upping the amount per feed every week.
Mine tend to have an initial feeding frenzy then calm down and what's left get eaten in the next 5 to 10 minutes.

I've been feeding sinking pellet before work, then the floating stuff after work then just before bed more sinking food at the moment. After a week of this I checked my ammonia and it was 0 which makes me think the filter has built up some bacteria now and is doing its job. They are getting the odd mussel too, I say they, the mirror eats all of them and the ogon might sneak in to get one. The mirror is unbelievably greedy!

Finally got heater on and working pond now steady at 13, degrees fed the fish a few small amounts this morning and they cleared it all up will let you know how the heater works out cost wise as first day was 7p a kilowatt hour so will see how it racks up over the week
