Is there Any Food to premote Sumi (black colour)?
I was just sat wondering if anyone knew of any perticular food or feeds that are known to or thought to have helped premote sumi development?
Looking at most colour foods and koi foods in general the majority are aimed more towards red colours with the use of caratonoids etc... Im no scientist or food specialist by far so looking at the ingredients tells me little towards how it will help colours but it seems that there is no food or certain ingredients mentioned to help black colour.
Now obviously if the koi has poor colours then it could be down to numerous reasons such as poor diet, poor water quality or just the kois genetics in general limiting how good it can get?
I do believe natural light plays a big part in all colours though as i have experienced a couple of times myself now with the grow on fish - this year my asagi has really lightened completely, the yamabuki is close to been a purichina and the beni on the showa has lightened up too so its not just one colour in perticular.
Its also mentioned a fair amount that hardness and ph is believed to have a big impact. Low ph and softer water is good for beni (reds) and Higher ph with harder water is better for sumi (black)?
I have a showa that had plenty of sumi and has lost a fair amount infact near enough all of it so before i just leave it to see what happens i was curious if there was anything else i could try to bring it back out? My honest opinion is that the fish just maybe doesnt have it in it? Quick comparison pic for example-
On the left was the day i bought it may 2016 at tosai and on the right is a more recently. Some probably wouldnt believe its the same fish ha ha but it definatly is.
So just a curious question for a sunday morning from me

Hi Lee,
Know what your saying,is your showa in the g/t?
My Asagi in the g/t has really lightened up and it could be that it needs a lot of light to bring on the sumi,it may come on in the summer Lee.
Hope your keeping well Lee,and your koi of course.John

Is there Any Food to premote Sumi (black colour)?
Hi john,
Yes the showa is currently in the grow on but it lost its sumi about 2 months after purchase whilst in the main pond during summer last year.
Im with you on the lighting though, so to try and combat this i have lowered my day light tube closer to the tank and now have it on constantly from 05:30 to 21:30.
It definatly aims more light directly into the tank now as the garage seems alot darker on a night now i could lower it some more but theres not long left now until temps start ramping down ready for back in the pond.
I also considered taking the lids off for a few hours a day as the poly sheet may be uv resistant which wont help?
Yes alls good here john thanks, same to you mate.
