Trout pellets
hi all, anything wrong with feeding trout pelllets.....analysis gives 45 % protein and the ash value is less than some of the better Koi foods. Much cheaper than branded products and trout grow really fast especially in warm water. Is it me just being a tight wad or is there a good reason why we spend soooo much on food for our pets. i know everyone will say its the amount of waste but the trout ponds dont suffer and trout like clean water too.....you feed em brown bread and see what happens. So what do you all say ?

Nothing wrong if you're keeping trout, but koi require more than just protein. Trout farms want fast growth as not overly bothered by appearance. We want koi with good body shape and bright colours. Trout farms flush though with river water, where we have koi in a closed enviroment. Good koi food produces little waste, if you fed trout pellets in a large volume, I'm sure your water quality would take a steep nosedive.
We spend so much on koi and filters, why skimp on food?

Have to agree with you mark. I remember reading some not so good stuff on high oil trout pellets actually been bad for the fish and alot of angling places have and are now banning them. I wouldnt bother with angling bait or trout pellets as they normally only for attraction rather than proper nutrition for the fish. It would be better if we could see the full ingredients/composition of the pellets to see how/if they are similar to our koi pellets?

I'd echo what Balder said, I recall reading an article some years back that strongly advised against feeding trout pellets but I can't for the life of me remember why exactly.

Hi there
i was really lucky and got to do a days work experience on a trout farm yesterday which was awsome! We had discussions about feeding koi trout pellets and
found out that you shouldn't feed them to koi., They are not designed for koi as koi can't digest the food properly they are very high in oils and the koi will put on weight in fat not muscle, I fed trout pellets once and the koi did not grow quickly at all, I know it's cheaper but the food is not designed for koi and shouldn't be fed to them sorry.

the high fat content in these farm feeds are not an issue for the trout farm as the visceral fat that is put down is easily removed when the animal is processed and its gutted all this excess fat is removed
go for a balanced food thats targeted at the species your keeping,
