What else do you feed your koi?
Hello! Newbie to fishkeeping and was wondering what else do you feed your koi and what are the benefits?
I look after my uncles' and just feed them live bloodworms but I've heard of people feeding them fruits and veg, I was wondering do you do this? and why? how did you come to starting doing it

Koi are omnivores so will generally eat anything but they seem to get used to certain foods and then become a bit fussy.
I supplement the pellets I use with lettuce, dried mealworms, orange and apple slices, and occasionally silkworm pupae.
The only reason I feed the alternative food is to give the koi a variation in diet and to give them a little life enrichment I also find it enjoyable to watch them tackle different foods.
The downside of feeding fruit and salads is the pulp waste it creates.Alias PWNN - Steve

Hi Matt apart from good quality pellets I feed mine watermelon & prawns ,mussels when they are discounted at the local supermarket. They go mad for them but it does make a mess when it comes out the other end so only once a week if that for shellfish. I've tried lots of things but those three mentioned always go down well.

Welcome matt attack. As above mine get a bit of all sorts but in moderation as it can quickly mess with the water quality. Mussels, prawns, mealworms, silk worm pupae. As for veg lettuce, grapefruit, watermellon, they love rinsed baked beans ive even tried chopped up spinich leaves they go mad for it. But as i said all in moderation 90% of their diet is good quality pellet.

Hi Matt and welcome to the forum.
Mine get dried mealworms, prawns, watermelon and a small amount of wholemeal bread with a small amount of hunny on but only give that to them every so often. Obviously they get their pellets as well which are good quality but as the other guys have already stated, it breaks their diet up a bit and gives them a bit of variation to just the same old feed, day in, day out. The treats are given 2-3 times a week, give or take.1500 gl in ground pond

Anyone tried lumpfish caviar? LOL (one would have to be wary of preservatives, though)
I've never tried it.

A good treat for the winter months is Ryvita, any type, just break them into bite sized bits, mine go mad for them, and only the same as wheatgerm, so a low protein treat.
