    The Daily pond temp thread

    South Norfolk

Still suffering a lack of rain! I think I may have lost a Victoria plum tree planted four years ago, with all the leaves brown & withered, been warm & cloudy lately, with a tiny sprinkle of rain last night.

Out in the open it’s 23.1°c 63%RH @ 1200 midday! In the shade it’s 20.8°c, the polytunnel is sitting @ 28.0°c with door & windows open. The pond is up & down for the last week @ 22.4°c right now.

A couple of koi with bacteria issues, netted & treated, into QT for a while. Some smaller Koi moved into pond from QT, so stocks going up! All feeding very well.

    Stay Lucky

A dry and bright start with sunny spells and feeling quite humid after the rain yesterday evening. It should be mostly dry today although the odd shower is possible. It will be reasonably warm with light to moderate winds.

Current temp is 17.4°c and the pond is on 22°c.

Another dry and bright start with sunny spells and light winds. There is cloud around, mainly to the west of us which keeps wafting over occasionally. It will remain dry however, with further hazy sun at times. Pleasantly warm in the sun, so not a bad summer’s day.

Current temp is 17.2°c and the pond is on 21°c.

Hotting up in the week ahead, koi will be even more crazy for food!!

Phew what a week this is turning out to be! & more to come,

Out in the open (full sun) @ 1045 this morning it’s 28.4°c, 51% RH, & rising fast (hit 34°c yesterday) in the shade it’s 26°c.

The pond has been around 22+ the last few weeks, currently 23.2°c & the polytunnel is 33.7°c with door & windows open,
Koi on six feeds a day, & still appears not enough, always looking for treats anytime!

My pond also reached 25°c yesterday although down to 24°c this morning. It’s set to be the hottest day of the year today with temperatures near 34°c for us in the Midlands. A mostly sunny day ahead but some clouds this afternoon may threaten an odd thunderstorm later. Significantly cooler tomorrow onwards with temperatures back down in the the 20’s.

Current temp is 17.3°c and the pond is on 24°c with koi being very active.

All of our Koi are enjoying the Hot weather, but it’s important to understand the stability of the pond temperatures!
Advice always states no more than two degrees rise or fall, within 24hours?, so if you have a small pond, you will see these figures rise & fall probably more than 2°, this is due to thermal mass, ie a small kettle boils quickly, whereas every large pot takes ages?
Fast rise also means fast drop!
So take the necessary precautions be it shade, or whatever cooling you can apply?
A large pond is very slow to reach high temps (20°+) but it also takes a while to drop temps, this is thermal lag!

Good luck & be observant in this weather!

    Stay Lucky

Disappointed so far was expecting it well over 25 but it is currently on 25 degrees.

It worried about temperature drops, even when I’m holding 16 in the winter, when the heater comes on around 9.30am it’s only dropped one degree overnight with a light frost, maybe 1.5 with a severe frost.

Can any one please tel me what a safe temp is for a pond at 26 today. Is it better to do a faster trickle in to stop it getting to hot ?

You could but you would have to monitor it
    Air is the most important.
    That's just my opinion though

Well what a difference a day makes, from high 30°+ (37°)the temperature is virtually halved?
Much needed rains, & a much nicer atmosphere all round, that heat wave was oppressive!
Back to normal this next week.

    Out in the open it’s 18.1°c 95% RH in the shade it’s 18.4°c ?
The Polytunnel is all closed up today, air temp in there is 21.7°c & pond (hit 26° a few days back) slowly recovered & holding @ 23.7°c so relatively stable!
All koi feeding well & no problems.

    Stay Lucky

Still mostly dry, the odd light sprinkle of rain, calm this morning & sunny, changes are forecast!

    Outside in the open @ 1100 it’s 25.4°c 45% RH, In the shade it’s 21.6°c.
Inside the polytunnel it’s 32.3°c ( must open the window & door) cooler nights lately, the pond is still more or less stable @ 23.3°c.

All koi feeding well! No problems.

    Stay Lucky?
