    5th anniversary present

The wife wants to buy me a koi for our 5th anniversary. Moneys a little tight as we have just had another baby and wife may not go back to work as our other daughter starts school in september. Yeah i know what you are thinking
We met in jan 2007, engaged in march 2007 married in july 2007 and our first daughter was born on 31st october 2007 .

Anyway, I am limited to £250.

What can I get for that money?, I would rather go with smaller and better quality rather than big and low quality.

I know I won't get anything amazing for that money but I expect it will be the best koi in my pond lol.

Do you have to collect or do they do a delivery service?

It's this one. Ref 239. It's a shame about the pattern towards the back of the koi.

Geese, I've just looked at where they are located. It's about 35 minute drive from me.

No need for the delivery, I'll just go over to see them

the only thing i will say is be very carefull on the size on the site because mine was clearly put down as 35cm and when i got it its only 29cm which i was not happy about at all but then nothing i can do about that. it has made me think twice about buying fish with out seeing them in person. this is just my own opinion.

Nice fish, but on the subject of size, I'm smiling as twenty-odd years ago when Waddy had "Infiltration" at Culcheth down the East Lancs road, where he stocked and sold koi, the same sort of "size differential" was occasionally the talk of the Northern BKKS.

I wish my wife would spend that sort of money on me for an anniversary present, but then I'd want a new golf bag and a new driver.

well when you expect a fish at a size and its 2" smaller it does make you think about not doing it again.

I agree with you mark ive just learnt the hard way buying/bidding on fish before you see them (lice ) also seeing a few swiming together that are the same price is better than just seeing a picture.Prehaps you should let them know about size problem with your fish, also it may be worth asking someone who lives near a dealer you want to buy from to go and check a fish out for you.Im only 20 mins from this dealer and would be more than happy to check out a fish for you if you ever wanted to buy from him again,im no expert but i think i could check size i think but it would be hard for me to buy blind again i know that

Yes, if you really want to be awkward, if a fish is not the size it was sold as, then this is a clear cut Trading Standards violation and you could politely point this out before taking it up with the E.H. dept at your local council offices, if you get no joy from the vendor.

Yes i did talk to them about the size and they said that they buy a group of fish in at a given size of say 35cm which the breeder says but they are not all sized. also one other thing was it has a split top fin which is right down near the body. im hoping this will heal up as if not then the fish is ruined. guess its buying blind from a picture. i will buy again from them to see what happens again next time so not letting it put me off just yet.

    Hi Guys,

It is always difficult to buy from a picture and is best to see them in person if possible and remember if you have any type of reason to doubt the person then don't buy as you need to be 100% sure you know about the person, fish the works.

At the end of the day we have to remember we are risking your collection of fish each time you introduce a new fish so think very carefully as you could find that what we think is a bargain can work out very expensive in the long run.

Very true Gaz but with this seller he has a really good name I believe or am I wrong. Some time you have to go on what people say or is this a wrong thing to do.

    Hi Mark,

What is his QT procedure ?

Have you been to the dealer and seen the set up ?

These are not trick questions about this or any other dealer these are two of the first things i want to know before i go buying fish Mark.

Yes of course its good for people to tell you if a dealer is good and try and help but you still should get down to see the set up and also find out whats what IMO before buying fish.

Although i know you from this forum if i told you a specific dealer this would not mean they are the best dealer or even best for you and would hope you would go and see them and make sure you are happy before purchasing a fish.

i have been pointed in the direction of many "great" dealers over the years and have to say some have been appalling so stick with the same guys as for me i find it safer and have complete faith in what they do and the fish they can provide me.
