    Mark Hi
Your question will be answered no doubt by many experts, & they all have their own values, to apply to pond size, against Koi numbers!
This Hobby has a saying "we don't keep Koi, we keep water"?
So dependant on what you are aiming for? (Show Koi, etc......)
Your prime directive is to maintain the highest quality of water, based on what the Koi needs to "Thrive"
That Word thrive should be your aim! Not to exist & muddle along with a pond full of stunted koi?
Like any animal there is quite a difference between a very well fed ( quality food) & looked after Koi, that has grown without any hindrance to its maximum achievable proportions? & a koi that always has to fight/scrabble to get enough cheap food to grow?
Remember fully grown Koi can achieve around a meter long! Dependant on genetics, heat, quality foods, a the best quality water.
Some of the best Hobbyists grow Show koi in approx, 1 square meter of water each, so they have room to swim, both vertically & Horizontally, to fully exercise all their muscles.

So I did not fully answer your question, but maybe food for thought on the quality of Life for your Koi.

    Good luck with your choices.
This is not an easy, or cheap hobby to produce good healthy or quality Koi

Thanks for reply.Interesting and agree with you.My koi seem very happy, indoor pond everything they need etc, good food.water quality is very good, filters get cleaned weekly.Just wondered what the reason is for how many fish per inch,if every thing is good and filters cleaned etc water checked weekly,Is it for room to swim or more about the waste the pond/filters can clear.thanks mark

Hi Mark, It is a hard question to answer but I think it is for guidance only.

For example my pond has over 30 koi and most a good size though I dont know their exact measurements but they are in a 3000 gal pond and probably double the quantity advised.
Good filtration is a major issue and I think I have that.

So, my opinion is really good filtration and kept spotless so no nasties and I think koi enjoy living in large numbers as it gives them confidence but water tests can tell you if your over stocked.

I have had around 40 koi in there similar size with no problems but I moved some on earlier in the year as I thought i was pushing it a bit.

A lot will disagree with me but as long as your water is very good and they are happy which you can tell then the levels can be exceeded to a reasonable degree.

Cheers, will keep a eye on them ,They are growing got 4 at 5" about 3 years ago and they are 14" now so fed well. They get muscles and prawns weekly plus good quality food.Chagoi just opens his mouth so I can pour food in.When I first got one I thought not the best colour of koi,but so friendly, even swims into your hands.cheers

Now here's the thing, 700 gallons = not enough swimming and turning space for even ONE adult koi.
So either use it to grow koi on and move them on to a full sized pond, or you overstock/ give too small a space for them to grow to their potential and live in. Sorry if this was not the answer you were hoping to hear.

I would also add that ammonia poisoning is more likely due to low dilution volume so check for ammonia and nitrate spikes shortly after feeding. Also if the power goes out koi in an overstocked pond will suffocate faster, especially at indoor temperatures.
