What’s the best way?
My pond was initially running a sieve to a couple of bead filters, however I have since replaced the sieve and one of the beads with a Synergy drum.
My new bio chamber has now arrived so I will be removing my last bead and only source of filtration in order to fit the chamber.
Im worried that once I remove the bead and fit the chamber I will have no mature media as the bio will be filled with new K1, which will obviously take some time to mature.
Can anyone offer some advice into the best way to go about this transition? Do I just bite the bullet and feed little if any and do frequent water changes to combat ammonia and nitrite spikes?
Is now the best time of year to do the change due to less feeding even though the k1 will take longer to mature with the cold temps?
Anyone got a large bucket of mature K1 near meI could swap for new!
Thanks in advance.

It takes a while for k1 to mature, a lot more time if its a moving bed. I would recommend keeping some mature media online until the k1 matures

I agree, try and keep one bead running, use flexi hose if necessary.
How about putting some beads in media bags and floating them in the bio?19,000 litres

I haven’t got the space in my filter bay in order to keep the bead running along with the bio chamber. I did think about having some beads in a bag to help things along but not really sure if this would be of much benefit.

What’s the best way?
Do you know a dealer hobbyist near by that would help out by swapping a bag of new media for same amount of mature media that’s the best way also just my thoughts but I’ve found the oase hel x media far better than k1 in my bio chamber it moves better with far less air to aggitate it and it doesn’t clump together as much also I replaced my diffuser in bottom of bio with a large air micro bubbler from Darren at absolute koi same amount of air going in but just a nice slow churning of media which I find helped speed up things

Here’s a picture bracket I use to keep it in place on bottom of bio much better movement of media than before when I used the 10 inch diffuser that was in bottom of my bio chamberIMG_0392.JPG

Some how you will need your water to flow through a tub of media, grog or other ceramic mature much faster but moving k1 takes 6 months +

can you bag and place near a return in the main pool over winter?
or in a large bucket get the K1 going on its road to hosting and then actually do the install?the slow pond build thread

I recently changed my vortex/aquadyne to a drum bio set up . Also worried about the bio maturing so i set up aquadyne next to pond no vortex, using the smooth inside flexipipe i ve got the return sitting onto of copings and the suction is in the pond only about 18inches deep with 12 inches of waste pipe with end cap and 10m holes drilled in it so fish dont get sucked up.
Been running like this about 8 weeks and water test last had zero ammonia ,nitrate 36 and nitrite 0.11.
I clean aquadyne twice a week as no vortex. Never stopped feeding

Don t forget to pp your new media first. It helps to speed things up. On the new media.
I would do as balder says and bag the old media up and dangle in the pond.
And fingers crossed it survives. You ain't got nothing to lose. As if you don't
It will die off anyway.
Good luck with the filtration change
